I guessed that Katie Ledecky was the subject, though she didn't even break the World Record, let alone by 2 minutes. She did improve her PB by nearly 30 seconds from ~September 2011, which isn't that uncommon aged 14/15, even if the end point was quite extreme!

Can't be Missy Franklin as she's 17.

Ledecky swam 11 seconds faster than she had swum the previous month.

Improved her personal best from 8:19.78 to 8:14.63 in less than a month

She broke 22 year old record.

The British swimmer who holds the record broke it wearing a hi-tech suit - now banned and Ledecky was about 1.5 seconds off of that.

And it's just down to age based improvements...

Franklin's performance was also pretty eyebrow raising.

I don't doubt there's a chance of skulduggery; I was specifically doubting that a 15 year old American had broken a world record by 2 minutes, which is the posted claim.

three big names that come to mind would be Hackett, Klim, Huegill. My money is on Klim

Those were the three names I thought of in that order. Klim is kind of the glaringly obvious one. Klim or Hackett.

How many 14/15 year olds do you know who took 30 seconds off their PB at elite level?

I would guess Janet Evans, who broke the WRs for 400m, 800m and 1500m aged 15/16 in 1987.

Female swimmers are very interesting in that they hit their peaks at such a young age. Thus they go from being children to world class (if they are going to ever get there) in 5 or 6 years. In these years, progress will be rapid at some stage, as the age 11/12 records - particularly for distance swimming - are a long way short of elite senior pace.

If the information at my local pool is correct, Rebecca Adlington improved from 9:45 to 8:15 for 800m from the age of 12 to 19, and 65 seconds of this improvement was by the age of 15, though she was some way short of elite standard aged 15. (8:40 for 800m is still mighty fast, though!)

Her 800m time in the British Champs in 2003 (aged 14) was 9:05, and she was 25s faster a year later.

Don't know if this proves anything. If Ledecky improves from age 15 as Adlington did, she'll be unbeatable for years!

Ledecky was 7 months younger than Evans (and also assumes that Evans was clean when she was beating swimmers from the GDR).

There's certainly plenty of reasons to be suspicious, but it's not easy to be sure in these cases. It will be interesting to see if Ledecky gets much faster - she may already have peaked. There are plenty of female swimmers who were at their best in their teens, though 15 and a half would be young for peak performance even so. Evans' PBs at 400m and 800m were both set when she was 17.

interesting that both Sun Yang and Ye Shiwen both trained under Denis Cotterell in Australia, who also happened to be Grant Hackett's coach.

Oh look, someone took my feet comment seriously.

Please excuse me while I go outside to laugh at them, it would be rude to do it right in front of them

Actually, I was riffing off of your post. I'm not a comedian though so it's easy to see someone missing the humor while attempting to add some more information to the thread.

Roger F seems, to my uneducated eye, to be a fairly clear story.

Best player of his generation, possibly ever, more or less clean, completely dominant...until a batch of 'marathon men' 5hr freaks caught up with him...a few years of getting beaten around a bit...followed by his 'comeback' to world no 1 where he can more or less hang with these guys again...the implication is obvious enough - and would also explain why he might favour more testing ("if we all have to stop, I'll beat those sods again")
p'raps.

but it is enough to jaundice my lens for his career. re: chronology, when he started, what is the diff? what is the diff if he just did a little testo and hgh to even up v Nolak and Nadal?

Dara Torres was a mediocre swimmer, who was only talented on an NCAA level.

High up, not a talent.

But finds talent in mid 30s? Like Michelle Smith.

Torres hubby is also a doc. Like Nick D'Arcy's old man.

Is this the same Dara Torres who won 4 Olympic relay golds between 1984 (age 17) and 2000 (age 33) and who set the American 50m freestyle record aged 15?

I'm not saying her form in her 40s wasn't suspicious, but to write off her early years as being medicocre just cannot be justified.

Unrelated to the above, she's seriously hot for a lady closer to 50 than 40!

Dara is also linked to a Canadian doctor, Anthony Galea, who provided steroids to athletes. She also "developed" asthma in her 30's in order to get a TUE.
