If Cav is top 2 and Degenkolb not on podium Cav wins the GC.

It may be a good stage as Giant may try to absorb the bonus seconds and put Johnny on the podium.

Otherwise, if Cav get even 1s from intermediate sprint he finish 3rd and still win the GC

I dont think anybody is expecting Johnny to take 2nd or even podium at the final sprint but these days anything is possible.

Same time in GC: Order is decided by stage placings. Cav and Degenkolb is equal atm, so if Cav finishes ahead of Degenkolb tomorrow he will win in the case they have the same time in GC.

Ehmm definitely not 2nd best so far in the race..Cav Viviani and Guardini were easily the fastest on flat sprints so far.

True, but Degenkolb has only participated in one sprint in which he didn't get it right. I'd back Degenkolb vs Viviani and Guardini any day of the week.

Just watched the highlights...pretty impressive ride by Degenkolb. 2 years ago I would have said without a doubt Cav wins the overall. These days who knows...Degenkolb could definitely defend the jersey if his team really tries.

It comes down to whether or not Cav can get 4 or more bonus seconds more than Degenkolb tomorrow (and finish ahead of him in the case that it is 4 more bonus seconds than him), not milliseconds nor millimeters.

Lets just hope that this race will be won by an at least slightly diverse rider. I.E. Degenkolb. And not CavenFat.

Should be a comparatively interesting final stage.

I think this is how it works ....

Given the first of two intermediate sprints (3-2-1- bonuses) is only 12km into the stage, it would seems likely Cavendish and Degenkolb will contest it, with not much interest from anyone else. Likely a breakaway scoops up the second intermediate spint. Assuming Cav picks up a second on Degenkolb on the first intermediate (he is plainly faster but Degenkolb probably gets second if no one else contest) Cav will therefore be 3 seconds behind, with 10-6-4 bonuses at the finish.

That scenario probably means Cav wins, because it is hard to see Degenkolb beating in the final sprint. Degenkolb's best hope would seem to be either:

(a) Cav doesn't finish in the top 3 (unlikely but not impossible given Viviani and Guardini both seem in good form and had less exertion yesterday)

(b) Cav finishes 2nd and Degenkolb 3rd (both of them probably behind Viviani).

So I think Cav wins the GC, although I am interested that he is such a clear favourite for the stage win (8/11 price with Ladbrokes). To my mind Viviani has at least at good a chance but is available at 7/2.

Is that true? I used to do timed uphill sprints like that followed by drooling and panting on my knees for about a minute with a heartrate in the 190's. Gave them up as I got too old for the suffering involved. Did I give myself brain damage? Maybe this quote needs its own thread.
