Effects of coronavirus on professional races

Daily update for countries with races in the coming weeks:

*497 new cases and 15 deaths in France.
*582 new cases and 19 deaths in Spain.
*121 new cases and one death in the Nederlands.
*47 new cases and two deaths in Belgium.

Forget about the races coming in the following weeks. On a bit unrelated note:

NBA has suspended the season.

NCAA said today the tournament will go on but without fans.

I suspect races in the next few weeks will be cancelled as well.

Apparently the reason for the suspension of the NBA season is due to a Utah Jazz player having preliminarily testing positive for the virus.

Realistically, this number needs to stop growing:

And until that happens, likely we are in suspend, not just when it comes to sport events. Will likely continue to grow though, for another month or two.

Yes, one of the players was positive and AFAIK the whole team is now in quarantine, locker room. Similar situation to UAE Tour i guess. I wouldn't be surprised if Paris-Nice gets canceled tomorrow.

Sounds like they aren't quarantining any of the fans who were there (affected player apparently wasn't in the area). Otherwise I do suspect we'll have something similar to UAE Tour, with one big exception of not exactly many test kits available.

CyclistAbi, I agree, the number eventually has to stop growing. The problem is that can take time. I agree that it's got at least a month or two still to go before we get closer to a point of saturation and at the same time hopefully treatments start hitting the market sooner whether than later as well.

As for the NBA, one Utah Jazz player got tested positive and as one of the officials was present at the last Utah Jazz game, and is now present on Pelicans-Kings game. Because of that the game is postponed. The initial plan was to play all today's games. Therefore yes, as only one person needs to be tested positive, to bring down the whole chain. It just doesn't makes much sense, to organize any team sport event in the near future. I am not counting all that much on any special treatments or vaccine emerging to stop the outbreak. The SARS outbreak lasted from November 2002 to July 2003. Therefore i am counting on summer, to help us out.

A lot of very funny Instagram stories. I don't see why they wouldn't want to room together again as it seemed they had a blast.

Hence why I then pointed out that it might actually be management declaring that they are a really strange influence on each other.
And that's just a funny effect! Think of a guy like Ulissi; he missed his daughter's birth. And it could be a while before he gets to see her, if UAE has the virus on the team.

On a selfish note, I'm actually for this complete shutdown. The Celtics bench isn't great so a rest will do the starters a world of good and we need Walker, Kanter and Brown 100% for the play-offs. The only negative is Hayward is on a hot streak and he's very much a confidence player. I worry that he may go cold again if his first game back is poor.

Why the pessimism? The very closely related SARS virus vaccine took about a year to develop back in 2003. There is far, far greater global impetus to perfect a vaccine for coronavirus. e.g. Chinese, American, European and Australian researchers are all working on this. I am optimistic the vaccine will be perfected sooner than you expect. But I do agree with you the outlook for this cycling season looks bleak.
What SARS vaccine?

This morning it was announced La Liga is "suspended" (abandoned?) for at least 14 days, which imo implies the chances of Catalunya taking place went from 0,1% to 0; not that anyone will be surprised by that.

The worst thing about that case is that the stupid player rubbed his hands deliberately over the microphones, desk etc to jokingly show that coronavirus was hyped and then he tested positive.
