I was talking in general, how many times did Contador ever try to sprint for a stage win and won? All his wins have been solo efforts.

Well he for sure took the fight to Cadels normal territory and wanted to flat out. Doubt he thought he going to win it, rather to strike fear and disarray in the competition.

The psychological effect of this cannot be underestimated.

Right. For sure it was not AC. Nice to see Cadel win, especially against "The-one-who-should-not-be-racing".

not pointless....another good opportunity to point out the relative lack of on-the-bike smarts of both your beloved cap-pistol boy and his DS Riis ....

and with respect to this year's Tour de Farce, that IS "on point"

;)

Yeah, imagine the poor guy maybe winning seven grand tours plus a bunch of other races by age 28 without knowing what the heck he's doing

I think he would have been okay if he'd stayed on the inside and not let Cadel get in front, forcing him to go around at the end. But really I believe that Cadel has been at peak fitness for a few days, and Contador is still getting race fit. Good stage today.

This is a pointless thread.

Why create a thread for such a small thing? that is plain silly IMO.

Out of the first 6 finishers today [i.e. Evans, Contador, Vinokourov, Uran, Gilbert & Hushovd] only El Pistolero was on his brake-hoods - the rest were all on their handlebar-drops. Lesson learned.

And now for a different angle, anyone remember watching Marco climb for long stretches, with his hands on the drops?

Umh ... what a shame, Alberto Contador was THE strongest today [stage 4 TdF] and I reckon he would have won the sprint had he put his hands ON the drops of his bars [like Cadel Evans & others] instead of on the brake-hoods.

If they want to make a sprint count, the SaxoBank director-sportif(ves) should ask all their riders to put their hands on their handlebar drops in a sprint.

There are far too many people holding their brakehoods in a sprint, it's just amateur like.

Yeah, maybe you can somehow get the folks at Versus to highlight this. I suspect they'd be happy to discuss this major tactical error by AC.

Maybe they all, with the exception of Evans should adopt Contador's method since he beat them all to the line.

yap, and had the finish line been 1m further, he would have won. Different rider, different style.

Off topic but where is El Pistrollero?

maybe he takes the approach a lot of regulars take and just don't visit the forum in july. i could see him getting angry at a lot of people :p

I think AC should be more like Evans but only to the extent it doesn't result in him not being AC. If he can strike that balance, then I think some day he may just turn out to be a pretty decent cyclist. Right now, he's just skating by on potential.:p

August can't come soon enough.

At least Contador showed up today. However he had no teammates on the front and therefore showed no desire to win. Cadel had teammates on the front and helping him back. Nice ride by Hushovd.

Exactly. He had no desire to win. The whole thing was an elaborate ruse. EDIT: No, Jobiwan, for giggles. He raced for giggles.

Gawd. I have a very distinct love-hate relationship with the month of July.
