Emerging Riders CQ Game

Page 8 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Well, with Lampaert out (maybe from the whole classics, but definitely from West Flanders where he picked up a bunch last year) and Sepulveda out for three months, that's pretty much it for me in this game. Not only were they my best riders I didn't share with Ludwigzgz, they were two of my best riders period. Ah well, it's been a fun game and I'll hope to hold on for a podium! Who knows, Sepulveda could come back and top 10 the Tour.

Year 3, Month 3 (to 3rd April)
No particularly stunning scores this month, but high scores for most teams, as there are many consistent point earners by this stage. The top 10 scorers this month are:

LATOUR Pierre 140pts 4 teams (2nd in Criterium Int)
THWAITES Scott 135 1 (2nd in Le Samyn, 8th in Dwars door Vlaanderen, and general consistency around the cobbles)
WACKERMANN Luca 129 5 (won no less than 3 2.2 tours in Algeria in the month)
DE BIE Sean 128 12 (won GC of the Dreidaagse van West-Vlaanderen)
JARAMILLO DIEZ Daniel Alexander 120 1 (2nd in Langkawi, so mainly earned in February)
YATES Simon 113 42 (7th in Paris-Nice GC)
SENECHAL Florian 111 23 (3rd in Le Samyn, top 10 in West Vlaanderen and Loire Atlantique)
PEDERSEN Mads 111 6 (won Gent-Wevelgem U23, and top ten in De Panne GC)
STUYVEN Jasper 107 36 (5th in the E3 Harelbeke)
ZABEL Rick 83 27 (4th in Limburg Classic)

Standings
6th this month, partly due to his very valuable unique pick of Vuillermoz, extends Ludwigzgz' lead even further, and MCMountain gets close to the podium. ItalianGigolo overtaking Black Bandit is the highest change in place, and Ingsve has a 3 place rise to get into the top ten at Leadbelly's expense. Top scorer Cyivel gets the biggest rise of the month (7 places) and Mutschi and Fauniera share the igmony of the biggest drops (6 spots).

Year 3 Month 4 To 1st May

It could be said that when you do less well one year than the previous, that you are no longer emerging. It seems unlikely that this crop if riders is as good as it will ever be, but the points haul in the main classics month was less impressive than it was 12 months ago. The star of the month is the same as in April 2015, and because of the same races.

ALAPHILIPPE Julian 262points 35 teams (2nd in Fleche, 6th in Amstel Gold, 8th in Brabantse Pijl)
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael 180 13 (2nd in Amstel Gold, 14th in Liege)
VAKOC Petr 150 6 (Win in Brabantse Pijl)

Ludwigzgz was 4th this month, his margin grows by another 222 points. Perhaps, if Sebastian Henao wins the Giro for Skidmark, the last few months will be competitive....

Standings

Ludwigzgz already had a dominant lead, and has had since very early on (since May 2014: Skidmark meanwhile has never been lower than 3rd, and that was the very first month), then he goes and wins this segment by a very healthy margin.
Below the top two, there are several positional swaps, MC Mountain, Italian Gigolo, Ingsve and GP Blanco all moved up, Hugo Koblet, Rote Laterne, Blackbandit222 and Karaev moved down. Flo rises 5 places to appear in the top ten, and Comodoro has a 6 place rise which, at this stage of the game, is in equal measure impressive and irrelevant.

Standings
This period comprised about 10% of the total points for the game, but hasn't changed the positions much.
In terms of the overall, it has been a bit like Froome winning a huge MTF and a long TT by Wednesday of week 1: Ludwigzgz's lead has got bigger again, and Skidmark will need the equivalent of a half hour breakaway onto the Champs Elysees, perhaps a clean sweep of all the WC podiums would do the job...

The highest in the table we see any change is GP Blanco up 2 places, and Karaev sneaks back into the top ten. Fauniera manages to rise 9 places: with relatively few points still available, he should at least have ensured a top half finish.

I had at least managed something on this edition during the Autumn, but I could absolutely have sworn that I had done an update on what (very little) had happened from the beginning of October to mid November: the spreadsheet had been updated, but I must have somehow lost the update without posting it.

Nevertheless, here is the scoring for those last couple of months of the game.

JANS Roy 194pts 1 team (Wins Nationale Sluitingprijs Putte-Kapellen, 2nd in Munsterland Giro for Vladimir)
LAMPAERT Yves 132 3 (World Championship time trials: 7th as an individual and on wining team for Vladimir, MCMountain and Skidmark)
MOHORIC Matej 125 41 (Stage win and GC 3rd in Hainan)
SCHELLING Patrick 87 1
BAUHAUS Phil 66 1
KOLAHDOUZ HAGH Amir 64 2

Like a sprinter in a GT, Vladimir takes the final laurels, even though he was last at the penultimate update.

A bit more analysis of the data tomorrow, and the launch of the 2017-19 edition of the game, but unil then, congratulations to Ludwigzgz, as we have known would be due, and to Sidmark and MCMountain for being almost competitive, to all who sent in a team, and (and I should have made a point of doing this more often at the end of these games) a huge thanks to the guys at CQ, without whom none of this would be possible.

Thanks, that were fun 3 years. Congratulations to Ludwigzgz who proofed to be the champion in the first emerging riders edition from the get go. Can't wait for the new edition, see you all there.

What could have been

Three years ago I challenged you to identify 18 riders who would emerge from the near obscurity of their early careers within three years. Our convincing winner picked up 65% of the best possible score (I suspect that will be a challenging benchmark for years to come), which would have been achieved thus:
ALAPHILIPPE Julian 2335
YATES Adam 1950
THEUNS Edward 1696
BENOOT Tiesj 1674
VUILLERMOZ Alexis 1493
LAMPAERT Yves 1462
BONIFAZIO Niccolo 1392
FORMOLO Davide 1385
YATES Simon 1371
VAKOC Petr 1370
EWAN Caleb 1363
NAESEN Oliver 1300
JANS Roy 1261
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael 1247
ROGLIC Primoz 1174
LATOUR Pierre 1169
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 1129
CORT NIELSEN Magnus 1101 (Total 25872)

While the top two were on most teams, and Ewan and the Other Yates Boy were even more popular, this list shows the uncertainty of any correlation between hype and subsequent success as we did not between manage any of Theuns, Benoot, Naesen, Roglic or Lopez. Vuillermoz was a unique pick for our winner, Ludwigzgz, but that cannot be taken as a sole key to victory, as Jans was also a unique pick, but for Vladimir, who only dodged the lanterne rouge at the last. Formolo (who also made the Collective Wisdom team with 18 picks) and Valgren Andersen (13) reflect a little better on the states of our knowledge 3 years ago, but the numbers selecting any of the rest of this perfect pool were in single figures: Lampaert (3), Bonifazio & Latour (4), Vakoc (6) and Cort Neilsen (9).

Collective Ignorance
There was a virtual team that outscored Ludwigzgz, and that is those who, like Theuns, Benoot, Naesen, Roglic and Lopez, were ignored by the whole lot of us 3 years ago. How did we ever ignore all of these? The guilt is universal.
THEUNS Edward 1696
BENOOT Tiesj 1674
NAESEN Oliver 1300
ROGLIC Primoz 1174
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 1129
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 986
MARECZKO Jakub 870
TORRES AGUDELO Rodolfo Andres 858
CLAEYS Dimitri 841
BARBIER Rudy 796
MOSCON Gianni 784
FEDI Andrea 756
MCLAY Daniel 752
SMITH Dion 714
GROSU Eduard-Michael 695
CARTHY Hugh 694
WOODS Michael 682
MAIKIN Roman 660
Total 17061

Collective Wisdom
Which is essentially the list of the most hyped young riders of late 2013. Some of them have indeed lived up to the promise, some have probably been nearly forgotten already.

This lot were all picked by at least one third of teams
(Name/score/popularity, in order of popularity)
EWAN Caleb 1363 44
YATES Simon 1371 42
MOHORIC Matej 366 41
STUYVEN Jasper 746 36
ALAPHILIPPE Julian 2335 35
HERKLOTZ Silvio 319 32
HOWSON DAMIEN 348 30
YATES Adam 1950 27
ZABEL Rick 379 27
SENECHAL Florian 704 23
HEPBURN Michael 361 21
EDMONDSON Joshua 177 21
FORMOLO Davide 1385 18
KUDUS Merhawi Gebremedhin 606 18
ZORDAN Andrea 5 18
HANSEN Lasse Norman 279 17
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian 588 16
LUDVIGSSON Fredrik 94 16
Their total score of 13376 would have come in 12th.

Yep: 40% of us named Andrea Zordan as one of the riders most likely to be among the big hitters by now, and in all that time he has earned just 5 points (for coming 125th in Ghent Wevelegem) Further causes for embarrassment can be found further down this post.

Other decent returns
The remainder of the riders who have at least shown some serious progress (500pts + over the three years) can be split not very flatteringly between those that at least someone thought of:
DILLIER Silvan 1063 7
SEPULVEDA Eduardo 952 5
BARBERO CUESTA Carlos 945 2
DE BIE Sean 907 12
FERNANDEZ ANDUJAR Ruben 859 7

HANSEN JESPER 707 2
BETTIOL Alberto 680 2
KONRAD Patrick 677 5
THWAITES Scott 646 1
CAMPENAERTS Victor 633 2
KOLAHDOUZ HAGH Amir 600 2
FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar 591 1

and those none of us did:
KÜNG Stefan 652
BUSATO Matteo 641
DEMOITIE Antoine 638
PRADES REVERTER Eduard 628
BEVIN Patrick 617
TURGIS Anthony 616
BUCHMANN Emanuel 609

CONTI Valerio 592
BRANDAO Joni Silva 590

SHALUNOV Evgeny 521
GRADEK Kamil 520
EIKING Odd Christian 518
MÜHLBERGER Gregor 516
ZANOTTI Marco 505

Oh dear
So, who is willing to own up to having invested part of their hopes in this lot, none of whom managed to average even as much as 10 points per year over the last three years? Whatever could we have been thinking?
BERTILSSON Christian
CHAMORRO CHITAN Juan Ernesto
GARBY Marc Christian
GIMENEZ NUÑEZ Carlos Alberto
KLEMME Daniel
LARGO QUINTERO Luis Alberto
LOH Sea Keong
MØLLER NIELSEN Mathias
MOSER Ignazio*
NOVAK Jakub
ORBE URRUTIA Haritz
OSPINA HERNANDEZ Argiro Alonso
PAULUS Daniel
SOKOL Jan
SVENDSEN Oskar
SWIRBUL Keegan
(*: This one was my own aberration, with my optimism based purely in the hope of him having some good DNA, but he abandoned cycling in favour of viniculture within a couple of months of the game starting)
Of course, it might simply be that these riders will have the hoped for trajectory, but on a different timetable, but this game is all about identifying whether it happens in those particular 3 years.

Year by Year
I had expected the scoring to be rather more backloaded than it turned out to be: the distribution of the total points scored across the three years was approximately 25% - 35% - 40%

The top scorers each year were
2014
1 Ludwigzgz 4452

How it was won

A dominant and consistent point haul (top, top and 3rd on year by year breakdown) by Ludwigzgz, gained by this bunch of riders:
ALAPHILIPPE Julian 2335
YATES Adam 1950
VUILLERMOZ Alexis 1493
FORMOLO Davide 1385
YATES Simon 1371
EWAN Caleb 1363
VALGREN ANDERSEN Michael 1247
BARBERO CUESTA Carlos 945
GOUGEARD Alexis 810
STUYVEN Jasper 746
SENECHAL Florian 704
KUDUS Merhawi Gebremedhin 606
ZABEL Rick 379
MOHORIC Matej 366
HEPBURN Michael 361
HOWSON Damien 348
BOSWELL Ian 302
HAUGAARD JENSEN Kristian 47

What he has here is 12 of the best scoring 13 from the Collective Wisdom team (more than half of us can feel a tiny bit of oneupmanship in regards to selecting Sebastian Henao), and then 4 high scoring picks that most people missed: we have already seen Vuillermoz and Valgren, but Barbero and Gougeard were also very valuable. Ian Boswell was not a total disaster: on the other 6 teams that chose him, he was on average the 13th highest scorer rather than 2nd lowest. We will draw a discreet veil over the inclusion of Haugaard Jensen.

Our winner was 13th in the popularity stakes, and the top team there was his closest challenger throughout, Skidmark, with this selection:
ALAPHILIPPE Julian 2335
YATES Adam 1950
LAMPAERT Yves 1462
FORMOLO Davide 1385
YATES Simon 1371
EWAN Caleb 1363
SEPULVEDA Eduardo 952
STUYVEN Jasper 746
SENECHAL Florian 704
KUDUS Merhawi Gebremedhin 606
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian 588
ZABEL Rick 379
MOHORIC Matej 366
HEPBURN Michael 361
HOWSON Damien 348
HERKLOTZ Silvio 319
HANSEN Lasse Norman 279
OLIVIER Daan 143

The first cycle finishes, the fourth begins
If I don't put up the post for the beginning of the 2017-19 cycle (the 4th iteration of this game) tonight, I will tomorrow. Same idea: 18 riders, less than 200 lifetime CQ points to their name as of end of 2016, to be resolved by end of 2019.
