“At 23 years and 251 days old, he becomes the youngest rider to finish on a Grand Tour podium since Nairo Quintana at the 2013 Tour de France.”

Wonder who is the youngest to get a GT podium. Mas is also the youngest Spaniard to get a GT podium since Valverde's 2003 Vuelta podium at 23 years and 160 something days.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it to be Cornet, who won the Tour at the age of 19.

Ha!

Mas sure looked good in the Vuelta and rode with a cool head. What a season for Q-S -- adding a GC threat to top-level classics and sprinters. 76 wins, with 40 between Viviani/Gaviria/Alaphilippe. Crazy array of talent, all peaking at same time.

Only disappointments were no wins for Stybar but a ton of one-day top 10s, and I thought Jungels underperformed slightly despite winning LBL.

He told his roommate, Michael Mørkøv, after stage 19, that he could have followed Yates. Mørkøv thought that either he was lying to himself, or he was stupid, and as Mørkøv said, "Turns out he was just stupid. Luckily."

I said so after the stage. He looked really comfortable following Valverde and Quintana.

Bump for speculation. Astana? I guess they still want another leader alongside Lopez. Would this put Mas on Tour in 2019 route or does Lopez want it in 2019? Mas would undoubtedly have stronger support in the mountains, and Vino (for better or the worse that entails) in the team car.

Or he could stay at QS if they get some mountain doms onboard. I think staying might not be a bad idea regardless actually. He's still progressing, he seems to enjoy himself, he doesn't have to endure the crushing expectations compared to when he would be riding for another team.

Unfortunately it seems like QS can't afford him.

Mas probably went from being worth a 200-300k contract to over a million, so it's kinda easy to see why QS wouldn't have the money

He extended last year, after his rookie campaign. I doubt he signed for much of an upgrade compared to the first deal. What did he achieve in that neo pro season? 2nd Overall at Burgos and 3rd at one Vuelta stage. So it really shouldnt matter what Mas would be would be worth now, since he signed that contract last year already. As basically a talented nobody. IF Quickstep has to let riders go because of money problems, Jungels, Stybar, Gilbert or Alaphilippe should save much more money than the contract Enric Mas signed in late 2017. Heck, I bet even Sabatini, Richeze and Lampaert get more money!

2nd in the Vuelta pushes up the value of a rider to a team significantly

I did not question that. All I said was that he is under contract from a time where he wasnt second at the Vuelta! And we dont know if his salary had a clause that would skyrocket if certain results would appear.

no, but the chances are that a team with money will make QS an offer they can't refuse.
Look at what Team Sky paid Garmin for Bradley when he broke his contract with them...
