He should be a monster in the 2nd week. It's normal he missed some racing km's in the first stages after not riding for 2 months.

It will be a big disappointment if he doesn't finish on the podium this Vuelta.

Chaves, Yates and Howson should all be firing by then thanks to their relative freshness over the guys who raced the Tour.

Chaves may be a little stale now but once he gets into the rythm...

S.Yates dropped back to pace himself like Valverde did later in the climb - S.Yates got his second wind and then rode up to a weakening Chavez and helped him up the remainder of the climb - And this is good team tactics by OBE.

This is what happens when you only look at the results sheet...

Don't confuse me with half of the jokers on this forum who don't watch races, but are then experts, at discussing the nuances of a race - I only post about races when I watch the race - And it's good tactics for S.Yates to go at a slower tempo at the beginning of the climb, allowing him to ride at a stronger tempo in the second half of the climb, and if necessary help Chavez if he is flagging - This is good team tactics - Just like Kennaugh and Lopez paced Froome up half the climb.

Think we are at cross purposes in this thread - In stage 9 S.Yates helped Chavez roughly between 1.5km to 1km to the finish and again in the last 200 to 300 metres - S.Yates and Chavez finished together in stage 9

Stage 10 - S.Yates helped Chavez between around 3.5km to 2km to go in the finish.

This is good team tactics.

Decent stage by Chavito. I still think he can fight for the podium. But he needs to find his real climbing legs pretty quick before Aubisque.

But normally that stage should suit him better. I still don't think he's as explosive as someone like Valverde or Froome.

After 2015 Vuelta and a pretty great Giro I still think he has chances to steal a GT in a near future

Think Chavez is riding at about the same level as the Giro, but of course he is in stronger company - Brave of him to attack today, though reckon he went 400 or 500 metres too early - I still question his preparation of one race day in nearly three months.

Today I wouldn't be so sure about that. He was very very good, but wrong tactics.

I still have the feeling that he is a little weaker than in 2015, but he probably isn't: he is simply up against much greater forces. His attack seemed a bit too hard from the get go so I can't say Im surprised he faded like that in the end, but I like the spirit. That's the Chaves I know and I like.

Lets also keep in mind that Chaves is a young talent. His attack today. Although not successful, he will be better for it in the long run.

Love the fact that he went for it. IMHO Huge Future Talent! Venga!

Even last year he wasn't super impressive on the super steep climbs (Ermita de Alba. Quiros or Cumbre del Sol. Benitachell) but yeah, he isn't at his best right now.

I love this about him. Not just content with a top 10. He wants a stage win.

I'm really liking Orica's two-pronged approach this Vuelta. Chaves is attacking and genuinely trying to win the overall while Yates is riding more conservatively, creeping up the overall now he has a stage win. I actually don't mind the "insurance policy" style approach when it's done this way.
