It just makes no sense that he can go toe to toe with Pogi in the parcours of the first week of this year's Tour and then can't keep with the peloton midway through this race.

Big mentality problem.
He is toasted right now. I told he was on vacations mode already.

Not really. 3 weeks after the GT double a form lapse must be significant. It's more or less what I expected. To see how good he can be in these type of races see the first few stages of the Tour (or the first stage of Dauphine).
A stage race is not a one-day race. Froome could also do well early in stage races.

Agreed, I find it hard to believe it is not a mentality thing.

We have a race. It would have been better for Belgium though, if there were some more Belgians to pressure Pog. Now it's just spielerei like Germans would say.

I agree that it's mostly mental. But I also think the specific prep is different to stage races, and that it would take investment and tinkering for Vingegaard to figure out how to perform well.

Those efforts are better spent on climbing and TTs.
