When I though Ineos would have the jersey soon I didn't think it'd be given to them by Remco's retirement. Sh*tty outcome for Remco, fans and his opponents as it looked to be a great race. Ineos is now in the spotlight.
Primoz has what it takes to contest this.

I didn't want to tempt fate (i.e. Rog could also suffer the same Covid disaster) with any post immediately after the Remco news. I'm sure Jumbo are as shocked this evening as everyone else is.

But, there's still a race. Thomas should technically wear pink on Tuesday & Ineos will have the lead.

For Roglič who has himself suffered so much bad luck in GT's over the past 4 years (including in the Giro 2019), this Evenepoel news is something that needs to be quickly processed by the team & they must refocus on beating Ineos now.

It's a 4th Grand Tour win now within touching distance.

Some cool info about Roglič TT today from him and their sport director.

They knew the first TT would be bad, because he came from altitude training where he trained climbing.
They were hoping legs will get better every day and second TT should be better. They got valuable information from Affini when he finished todays TT about the head wind in the middle of the race. So they calculated Roglič should start slow and then use power through the middle head wind section where he could take time back.
Race director was very worried after the first time split, but then things got better quickly. They don't tell Roglič anything about his time or how he's doing compared to others when he's on the road! I find this interesting.

Now if Primoz will win this Giro, he‘ll feel like Ivan Gotti felt after 1999 Giro.

Gotti said, „The Tifosi treated me as if I was a thief“…

This time, Tifosi grief about loss of Remco. 1999, it was Pantani. History repeats itself, sometimes - as they say…

Things are looking quite good for Rogla. I think he needs to hit hard already at Crans Montana, to separate wheat from the chaff. My guess is that Thomas will drop and Tao will be the last man standing.
Plus now Vlasov will see his chance and go for the GC victory, now that Remco is out.

Vlasov and Kämna will want to beat Primoz now…

I think Thomas is going to be very very good; we shall see!

The tifosi Adored Pantani. I doubt they give a second thought to Remco leaving. He isn't an Italian Champion like Pantani was. There are statues and memorials to Marco all over the country.

I think it's important in the light of the evening Remco events, to once again admire the achievement the 2019 Giro was from the very sick and later also heavily injured Primož.
It is yet another testament to his perseverance. He could (and maybe even should) easily quit while falling badly ill while still comfortably ahead in the GC... but he continued and battled to the third place.
Or maybe some would say it's a sign of how Jumbo doctors (just like the UAE ones) have no regard whatsoever for the health of their riders, and should have their license taken...

What happened in the 2019 Giro again? Did he have a cold?

Disappointing. I was looking forward to have 4 way battle when real mountain tests come. Anyway, go Rogla.
I completely agree. Disappointing also for the reasons mentioned above / elsewhere (minimization of a potential victory, no matter who wins, and having a target on his back).

Primoz just can't catch a break. (only half-kidding)

I felt robbed of spectacle when Rogla crashed in 2022 Vuelta, that this year's Liege-Bastogne-Liege with Pogi out even before broadcast started and now this. Hopefully the remaining GC contenders will make a proper race out of it.

Why? Remco Evenepoel has only ever finished one 3 week race & that was the Vuelta last year (which had 3 rest days due to the long transit from the Netherlands). He hadn't even built up the gap he needed in the ITT's. He has no history in the Giro other than a DNF two years ago. Pantani was Pantani. This is much, much different.

GT's where one of the two pre race favorites drops out aren't unusual. Nibali has a TdF in his large bag thanks to a series of unfortunate events befalling his two rivals back in 2014. It happens. Bad stuff has happened Rog in GT's as well.

I don't think it's good for Rogla that Remco is out. Everyone will race against him now.

I'm really of the mindset that we need to be careful with these sorts of situations ergo the habitual platitudes are necessary ("anything can happen", "crashes are possible", "Covid could impact anyone" etc.).

But seriously. Roglič is sitting two seconds from pink with Ineos in the lead (& they're a man down, having lost Ganna). And there's absolutely zero evidence Rog isn't fit & ready to do his usual numbers in the mountains. On the contrary he's lean & riding into form in this Giro with the aim of a third week peak.

Ineos can do whatever they want because they've never performed well when one of the two Slovenians shows up with numbers they don't have.

It's mathematics & they're on Rog's side. So yeah this morning I'm feeling a bit like "let's freaking get this done".

Ineos look mighty strong but I'm not convinced anyone bar TGH is gonna be close to him in actual level. Kuss should be strong enough to be of help when it's down to 10 guys.

So one big rival less. For Roglic it's not good that there are 2 Ineos guys so close (plus a few other can attack from a far forcing his team to work). Rogla will try hard to distance at least one of those two Ineos guys on Crans Montana (Thomas more likely) to make it tactically easier later on while Ineos may try some tactical solutions on earlier cols. The Friday's stage could be fireworks.

I will be fairly surprised if roglic can't dust ineos with relative ease to be honest. Even not at his best you would expect him to be able to keep up and take the boni seconds.

G is consistent but lacks explosivity, TGH is looking really good but I have never considered him to be in rog's league. But that could have changed, but I see no real evidence of that yet.
