It's a very normal sanction, and he didn't even do it after a mechanical. It's better tolerated if you draft the cars of other teams or briefly your own. This was full-tilt drafting of your own team car after a planned stop. It could only be worse if he took a sticky bottle or got a magic spanner à la Nibali.

I like Primoz a lot, but come on, they took a huge risk doing this. They know it's not allowed. It was a planned bike change. They know there's always camera's showing such situations.

Yes, rules are very often arbitrarily enforced in cycling. The thing is, Borah knows that! Everybody knows that!
Anyway, it's 20 secs. I doubt it'll make a difference.

You make a rule, the rule gets applied 1% of time, and when it does, it's somehow fair. That tracks perfectly.

Yeah everyone will sleep better tonight knowing the rules have been enforced & the regulatory sanctity of bike racing is safeguarded... & then go back to 'I don't give a cr*p about drafting, sticky bottles, riding on pavements' & all that stuff on Tuesday.

and then when they apply a rule that Roglic benefits from (TDF stage 11)? it's a bad horrible rule that needs to be changed!
I called that one immediately, and just like today it was both in line with the text of the rules and how they have been enforced. This one really shouldn't come as a surprise, and it thankfully won't matter anyway.

i agree, but there are people on here commending this call that were upset about the one at the Tour.

Were the rules around drafting toughened up this year? Nico Roche on comms was suggesting there would be a penalty when he saw he was behind the Bora car, that it was "no longer allowed" to use your own car that way. But I'm trying to think of other time penalties for that recently, perhaps Cav in the Tour after a mechanical (not that 30s to a sprinter is the same thing anyway).
Expecting the rules to be applied consistently within the same race is a stretch, expecting the same from race to race

Not over yet.. I suspect stage 20 will be a "bad day" where Mas can gain some time.

Rog has a better team than Mas though to manage that sort of stage.

Also, despite all the hoopla surrounding the time penalty, I much prefer to see him lose 20 seconds on this sort of commissaire zeal rather than losing 20 seconds the way he lost them on the Angliru in the 2020 Vuelta (for example).

I think his form is fine going into the third week.

Surprised to see Lipowitz that strong. He was super, that‘s clear, but nowadays he‘s almost world class. Climbs with Vuelta Roglic. He shows what‘s possible.
