I think TJ Quinn has made the best point of anybody. Criticizing an athlete for testing positive for something that they are allowed to take is not very logical.

Amen. If you don't like the rules, discuss the rules. This shows no violation of the rules.

Ross Tucker has suggested that all TUEs be eliminated. I think that is extreme, but there is probably too much abuse of the system.

Its a very poor argument...

Its not a case of "IF" the rules are applied but "HOW" the rules are applied and it certainly appears that some Federations are happy to sign off TUEs to help the athlete win. Lets see what else those crazy bears have in their database hack.
Agreed. Ross' argument isn't very good.

I wasn't speaking to Ross's point, I was speaking to Quinn's point that this is all "legal" therefore should be ignored. You appear to be taking that line as well, its a very poor argument.

can't wait for the cycling leaks

Froome could be a 0 time GT winner or 7 time GT winner :D

however i remember him saying he only took 2 TUE's in all his career, if true meh but what if russian leaks show more TUE's ? juicy

If that is your interpretation of his argument, then you are missing the point. Anybody who was against scapegoating the Russian contingent in the Olympics should be against scapegoating athletes who were following the rules. Discussing the 'how' of TUE administration is discussing the rules and is the direction he thinks this leak should lead, which seemed to be your exact point. The athletes like Williams and Biles are the bright shiny objects and should not distract from the focus on the institutional problems.

it takes two to tango....just because 'the rules' allow me to load-up doesn't mean I have to...

.....or more usually referred to as the spirit vs the letter of the 'law'

what was that film called? Bad News Bears :)

Allowing athletes take banned substances for alleged illness is abusing the rules. Rushing TUEs in for 1 athlete but not others is abuse of rules.

The Federation allowing the Williams sisters to compete while taking some heavy duty medicine is abuse of the rules.

Froome claiming he has asthma, never mentioned in his biography, is cheating.

But, that presupposes guilt. It is likely that some people apply for TUEs for legit reasons. I already mentioned that Venus has been battling a chronic autoimmune syndrome. ADHD is a real diagnosis and it doesn't appear by google search that Biles has talked about that before. Should she be forced to defend her medical issues now that it has been put on public display. I would support the leakers if names were redacted. Otherwise, it seems like score settling by the Russians for an admittedly unfair decision that went against them in Rio.

i agree there are some issues regarding presupposition however we've been led up the garden path by all involved...its too late

never have we seen so many 'sick' winners suffering from all sorts of ailments

victory should be accompanied by tales of how everything went right, an alignment of the stars if you like...they are now more likely to be accompanied by tales of medical woes....

I finally understand why I couldn't make it in the NBA, pro tennis, or the UCI World Tour. I am one of those unfortunates who doesn't suffer from ADHD, asthma, or really anything. Drat!

Maybe FancyBears will create an account in the Clinic? :surprised:

So Serena on

Anyone who can say anything about this?
It shows that Dr Stuart Miller, ITF technical director who authorised Serena's TUEs, is no more than a doping enabler.

I don't think we should hold our breath for cycling leaks, sounds like they'll only expose Olympic athletes, I suppose some track cyclists could be among them but on an Olympic level cyclists are just small fish.

SlickMongoose, my wife has exercise induced asthma. That is why I find it so ludicrous that Froome, Wiggins, and the rest of these cheats take a couple of puffs and ZOOM! off they go up the Alps and Pyrenees. My comment was sarcasm on the fact that so many world class athletes are "suffering" from these debilitating diseases. Please accept my apologies for offending you.

No offense taken, I was just messing around. I'm just kinda dissapointed that I don't have the kind of asthma that gives superpowers.

then - no offense, no favours, and certainly no derogatory intent intended - you need to peruse the xc-ski doping thread and the dedicated asthma threads in the clinic.

make yourself aware of how the multiple norwegian super-champions afflicted with the ailment you claimed to share with them but being limited, ...how they, essentially the very sick asthma sufferers incapable of competing (their words, not mine) became the world's best-est, fastest super skiers... read up, friend !

if you still will cling to your asthma ailments, i'm afraid you may be less than genuine with your concern...just saying.

TUEs are a cancer for high level sports.. i am glad they get out. At some point if you are injured or sick, you get treated and then you compete again, you just can't keep competing while "sick" and loaded with medication, it doesn't work like that, or rather it shouldn't.

Athlete: "I have this chronic/acute physical ailment that makes it difficult for me to compete in elite sporting events. What should I do?"

Doctor: "Consider a different line of work."

The End.

Which isn't surprising at all considering he said EPO wouldn't be effective for tennis players.
