To be fair tho, Campagnolo only released Ergopower in 2002 about two years after that photo was taken, so at that stage STI was the only integrated system available.

While we're on bikepron, here's a photo of Tafi's saddle from that C40 - I challenge you to find a better looking seat ...

...2002 huh?....what parallel universe are you calling in from ?...because in this one, Campy introduced it in 1992...

Cheers

That photo of Tafi has 9s shimano, introduced in 1997, whilst Campagnolo had had ERGO shifters from late 1991, early 1992. Both introduced 9s in 1997, Campagnolo went to 10s in 2000.

To be fair.

Yes, obviously I meant 1992 not 2002 re ergo power. Easily lose a decade at my age ;) that then invalidates my comment re shimano. I must be getting old ...

STI did beat Ergopower by about 4 years though, I was being tested in about 88 by the pros, (I remember Phil Anderson running it at TVM) and it was with the public maybe 90 or 91?

... not sure if Campy even had an SIS equivalent by then, how times have changed!

My favourite road team bike of all time is the bike that the guy in front in this picture is riding ... And it is my favourite because of who he was and how he rode it in that Tour ... :D

A close second would be Simoni's spider paint job Cannondale - because the paint job is so awesome and because I love Cannondales:

When it comes to off road, I'm going to be boring and stick with the Cannondale theme ... My reasoning is simple - with the exception of the team only bike, I own bikes that are effectively the same as each of these, and I simply love how they ride ...

Cyclocross - Franzoi's Liquigas bike:http://cdn.cannondale.com/uploads/images/slideshow413_url.jpg

MTB - a Scalpel ... either the team only Six13 old model (which I still think is a better bike to ride than the new version): http://photo.pinkbike.com/photo/470/pbpic470106.jpg
or Tinker Juarez's workhorse: http://cdn.media.cyclingnews.com/2009/08/07/1/tinker_scalpel_full_view_600.jpg

Has to rate as one of the best of all time ... definitely best in my memory of following cycling (Roche in '87 would be second)

Should've also said in my original post - another part of why I love that bike was when Winning (I think it was them) did a review of the bike and I found out that I had the exact same bike sizing as Fignon! Sadly, that and wearing glasses are pretty much all that we have in common ... :D

It's a beautiful bike but not a big fan of the drilled out Campag. I mean, how much weight do you actually save?? Can you improve perfection?? I don't think so!! :D
True, the weight saving would be negligible and it is not the best for component flex but it was common practice and most of all it really adds to the character of the bike.

^ If you screw up drilling out a 52 tooth Super Record chainring it's going to cost a small fortune to replace don't forget!! :D

Back in the day there were bikes with drilled Everything, more the late 70's and before my time, though. Any weight saving was killed by aero disadvantage. I am not a big one for Aero, the bike is nothing compared to the rider, but increasing surface area and turbulence points by that much is definitely not going to help :)

And when I say everything I mean everything:
Brake callipers
Forks (!)

Not suer how keen I would be on riding a bike with drilled forks, sure you can engineer it to work, but...

Anyway my favourite

1969 Faema Masi built by Alberto's dad Faliero for Merckx. Supposedly Eddy never rode this because of the milled out chain stays. Looks cool though.

That frame looks much too large for Merckx ...
I don't doubt that he wouldn't want to ride it (ouch!).
