On the basis of his performances and Cavendish's declining results they are letting Cav go. Cav definitely would not have liked pulling for him. Team orders maybe

Fernando Gaviria (Etixx Quickstep) will not take today's start. He is our only non starter for stage5 of The Aviva Tour of Britain, wonder why? he was seen warming up.

Though the Colombian sprinter won the 4th stage yesterday, he is suffering from pre-patellar friction syndrome in his right knee, which needs a period of rest.
"This problem can come up either after a trauma like a fall, or from overuse, as in Fernando's case," explains Team Doctor Yvan Vanmol. "Fernando is a young rider who is measuring himself against certain distances, and with a professional pace for the first time. This is why, as a precautionary measure, we decided to not let him start and give him time to recuperate 100 percent. In the next few days we will evaluate if and when Fernando will be able to race from here to the end of the season, without any risk."

Like for any Colombian.

Let's be fair, for any youngster who does well.
Remember when Kwiatkowski exploded and we suddenly had a billion zillion trillion people who couldn't write his name or know what his strengths and weaknesses were yet assured everyone they were lifelong fans?

Anyway, Gaviria. Definitely an possible top sprinter in the making.
Also nice to see Cavendish not being a tool and celebrating his teammate's win. Did he do the leadout as well?

Gave and I have been FB friends for the last 5 years and IG for the last 3. He told me he would be this good.

Seriously though, I don't think it's the same as with Kwia as he had been around for a few years before really breaking out. Almost everyone found out about Gaviria at the same time when he beat Cav twice at San Luis so in essence everyone who started liking him then truly will wind up being a fan from the beginning but there certainly won't be any cachet to it since he made such a public splash initially. It will be more like a Sagan situation.

Wiggins told Sky Sports this week that Cav will be elsewhere in 2016.

He's next in line for sure but IMO those two stand ahead due to the competition they've been up against.

Yeah, no kidding. Not that Mareczko can't get there, but really - his victories came against such luminaries as Scott Sunderland and Ahmet Orken, or random Venezuelan domestic riders. Okay he beat Palini and Modolo in one sprint, but more broadly than that he hasn't really shown to be much more talented than any number of young sprinters. For Gaviria, other than his win against nobodies in the Czech Tour, here is a list of who he beat in a sprint last year:

- Mark Cavendish (2x)
- Andre Griepel

I feel like that firmly shuts the door on that discussion, at least until further evidence emerges in the future.

Bingo, while Ewan pushed Greipel, Cavendish, Kittel and Viviani hard on several occasions, destroyed Degenkolb on the 5th stage of the Vuelta and made a mockery of the Tour of Korea while barely 21yo.

People forget that Modolo (same launcher, Richeze) and Mareczko were also there last year (as in, in San Luis, behind Gaviria in all three sprint stages). Sagan and Viviani add a little more depth to Gaviria's scalp list. Nothing need be said about Ewan's own belt notches, surely. The future looks promising. Heck, the present ain't so bad either.

If it wasn't quite shut then it doubtless must now be, at least for the time being.
In any case, even though it's early in the season, the manner of the victories is fairly impressive given the competition.
