Paraguay may not be full of skilled players, but when it comes to tough playing they are second only to Argentina among South American teams. Italy may have a hard game in the second half.

Wow.... Mr. Paraguayan goalkeeper. What a hopeless attempt. Jumped, sort of waved at it with one hand, and then sat and watched it go in.... Pathetic

After the insanely easy Oceania group (Andorra would be 3rd best there) they faced the #5 of South America and they usually lost.
Teams like Uruguay or Ecuador would be among the best in Asia.
So yes, they did it to improve their chances.

surely this makes no sense as new zealand were able to qualify as soon as they didn't have to face australia.

didn't new zealand play bahrain in the play offs? which means the play off opposition for oceania has changed and it would be too easy for australia to be in that section.

that said, i agree, they should stay 'at home' where they belong. and not pretend they're asian.

Portugal will take it I think. Probably a scappy 1-0 or something.

Cote d'Ivoire is such a weird case. They have a bunch of good players, many in top leagues and good teams in Europe, but they've never shown any consistency internationally. They sometimes have great games, and sometimes mediocre games. I unfortunately saw very little of the African Nations Cup this winter, so I guess I can't really judge how they've looked recently. One expects that if Sven hasn't been to busy 'meeting' the lovely ladies of the Ivorian FA he should be able to at least bring some consistency to the team.

I agree. But with Portugal's well documented problems scoring and lack of leadership (Ronaldo is the captain. God save us), anything can happen.

"Beyond awful" seems apt

They have two big problems.

1. Their fullbacks defend worse than most wingers. And with the wings being Portugal's second strongest point...

2. You know that big hulking lug Yaya Touré the midfield destroyer? He's the most creative player in their midfield.

Which makes their game highly predictable. Pass to wing. Cross. Pass to wing. Cross. Pass to wing. Cross.

Awww... Charming result. Probably not deserved, but the Slovaks have only themselves to blame for taking their foot off the gas.

Interestingly though all teams are on equal footing in Group F so far.

Come on random African team!

Meh... I pretty much always root for the 'smaller' footballing country too... But I have a lot of personal connections to Portugal, so I've always supported thm as my '2nd country'.

EDIT: Cristiano getting his groove on.
