C'mon, Dino Zoff?

I think Baresi was in that squad too, must've been like 20 or something though.

Big Italian football fan here though..

He's obviously joking. He realized he screwed himself with some ridiculous argument that I didn't even feel merited my attention, and now he's contorting himself into all kinds of difficult shapes to keep his argument afloat.

I imagine, on the basis of his previous point, that people only remember Pele from the Brazil 1970 team, because they'd won it relatively recently before. I guess Carlos Alberto, Jairzinho, Roberto Rivelino, Gerson, and Tostao are just figments of my imagination.

well i know zoff and tardeli, but thats it and only because i read all the football history books and watched all the wc documentaries as a child.

Obviously some fans will know the names of various wc winning footballers. But not the casual fans.
the argument isnt ridiculous. A country does take a first world cup win more seriously than it does a 3rd or 4th win. When 22 people in a country have won a world cup, they are more special in such a country than if 66 people in such a country have won the world cup, as is the case with germany. And had they won this time that would be now about 90. The Germans arent going to remember all those guys. Sure mueller, beckenbauer 74, bierhoff 90 + the guy who spits (voller i think) but what about 54. Sure some people might know all the names, but the average person wont. they will tell you 1 or 2 names from each world cup. In a country like england on the other hand, people will be able to name about 10 players from the 66 squad, even though it was so long ago, because it is a sole world cup.

Well, I'm off in a little bit to see the complete and total obliteration of the Dutch football team. Seriously this will be like Battle of Gembloers all over again.

I will take solace in the fact that today a Luxembourger beat a Spaniard, and the flag of Luxembourg is very similar to ours, and that if Schleck had been born 120 years ago (like Lance :p) he would've been a subject of the Dutch Monarch.... Gotta find a bright spot somewhere. :)

I think emperor charles v was king of the netherlands. He was king of modern Spain, portugal, germany, austria, switzerland, north italy, pieces of africa, and i think netherlands as well.

They didnt much like him in spain though, and he bribed his way to emperor of germany so im guessing hes rooting for netherlands from beyond the grave

From our national anthem: "I've always honored the king of Spain"

At the moment, that is a noble statement. King Juan Carlos is a man who deserves a lot of respect and is worthy of honour.

Congrats to Spain.

Never felt we stood a chance. Even though there were a few chances we should have gotten.

I don't agree but I've got the feeling Holland will fall into an offside discussion for years to come.

Fuck it... Just fuck it

Most of the (Dutch) people I was with thought we were screwed by the ref. Given that Nigel de Jong should've been 100% off in the first half I don't think we can complain. We had our chances, and Robben didn't take them. Spain was better and deserved to win.

I thought they played better in some of extra time, but Netherlands had them figured out after the first ten minutes or so. Stekelenburg had a great game. They had a couple of good chances, but I think Robben's first one-on-one was the best. Must feel terrible.

Also sad for Van Bronckhorst that he didn't get to lift the WC in his last ever game.

That was definitely the most nervewracking game I've ever seen. So devastating. So close. Jesus Christ.

forlan wins golden ball whatever that is. Good. Very good. Was a player i always liked, especially cos he scores half his goals from outside the area. Mueller wins young player, but only on some tie breaker.

I also think that from the players who got 5 goals diego should win golden boot, because his averagae distance for goals was about 30 metres, scneijder about 20, villa about 10 and mueller about 50 cm.

ps he looks like franco pellizoti

Whatever, congrats to Spain... Enjoy it.

But when your country goes bankrupt 5 months from now, don't come running to us. I for one will be first in line to say "not a single fucking peseta is coming your way"

Its silly and cruel of me I know, but I will enjoy that moment when it comes

I thought Müller wins because he had 5 goals + the most assists (3).

Yes, Mueller has the golden boot, but Forlan wins the Golden Ball....

Apparantly Sneijder finished second there. Fuck that too.
