'Hate on success'? More like just hate on Spain. I really don't like the way they play. Especially last Euro.

It really doesn't matter why there is hate. There is never anything good about it and hate is nothing but the destructive weakness.

Chile have 1 player who would make the Spain team. Their central defenders play for second division teams.

My god Spain are poor.

Vidal and Alexis would sureley make it, those are two. Plus, the great thing about them is that they don't even field central defenders. ;)

Netherlands is correct.

Also it is incorrect to say something is more correct than something else.;) Like with perfection, there are no degrees of correction.

I knew the country is called Netherlands, the question was about the football team. Now are you saying that there only is one correct answer to that question? Or that if there are more than one, but they are equal?

Amsterhammer said:
'Nederland' is the correct Dutch word for the country, always translated as 'The Netherlands'. The national football team has always been known as 'Oranje' or 'Holland'. Therefore, I think that 'Holland' should be used rather than 'Netherlands'.

If Holland plays the way they did tonight, and if Chile plays the way they did, Holland will lose.

I haven't seen the Chile-Australia match, so I don't know if the Aussies did good counter attacks to score their goals. But one of the big problems of Spain offensively was that they utterly suck at counter attacks. Which is quite the opposite with the Dutch. You'll always have problems to break teams down when you give them a lot time to organize, plus for Spain then not being able to get their act together in build up play.

So to see the game will be very interesting and probably also somewhat enlightening about the qualities of Chile in certain parts of their defensive play.

So what is Holland then? A sun-lotion, or something? ;)
May Amster knows more... ?

holland is the name of the provinces (regions) south and north holland (south-holland = where Rotterdam is. North-holland is = Amsterdam) ..

You can **** a lot of Dutch people off by calling their country Holland (eg, those that do not live in north or south holland) :p

also i think chile-netherlands could be a high scoring game.

Because as well as chile attacks, their defense looked really vulnerable against Spain as well. But Spain simply does not know how to shoot or deliver the blow effectively.

If there's 1 thing that Netherlands have been good at this world cup is being effective. Against spain nearly every chance is a goal. Against Australia we again did not have that much chances and still scored 3.

Our defense looks weak too. So Chile-Netherlands could well be a 4-3, 3-4, 2-5 or whatever other hockey score

Does North-West count as north? Or South-East as south?...
Basically all people from Netherlands live in Holland, right? :D

Visual help! May not be accurate...

Very impressed by Chile, they did very well in qualifying if I remember correctly. I hope they win the group.

You yourself said it could have been 9-1.
Netherlands had more chances in the final 10 minutes of that game than most teams will have the entire tournament.

Unbelievable the delight at Spain's downfall. I can understand if it was people with opinions of wanting someone else to win for a change but it's not, it's more to do with their style of play and what some perceive as tiki-taka or whatever mythical phrase they have for it.

Their success and style is built on passing with progression. That's not boring, passive possession like we seen against the Dutch and Chile is. Passing with progression and moving the ball quickly in the last third is a style of football that will never die. That style with quality players will always cause problem to defences in future years to come if it can be achieved to a sufficient level.

You take the Barca/Madrid players since 2008 who have won the 3 major tournaments, played in 2 Confederations Cup, the Spanish FA ridiculously organising friendlies far away in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea, Argentina, Ecuador, etc, the most intense battles we ever have seen in Classicos, Barca players playing in World Club Championships and all this accumulation has caught up with them physically. Ferguson speaks of teams that on average have 4 year cycles, Mourinho in his early days at Madrid said Barca would only have a couple of years more on top and that it wouldn't be hard to sustain for much longer. A big thing of the Barca/Spain is the high pressing game and that over a number of years is enormous demands physically to maintain. Guardiola felt the players towards to the end of his time were finding it harder to take on his instructions. It's not the end of the style, it's the end of this side at the top of their game. A staleness has come in.

They're a special group of players who should be applauded for what they have achieved and to keep those high standards up for 3 consecutive tournaments running, is no mean feat.

I think a lot of people are just happy we are not going to have another Spain victory. Upsets and collapses are dramatic and entertaining as well. They lost though... Big time.

I don't mind that. That's fair enough and have said so myself.

My apologies, read your post in pieces over a period of time and missed/forgot that statement. Personally, I was not necessarily cheering against Spain as much as I was cheering for Chile to win. They did well in qualies and I do not want to see them not make it out of the group stage. I was pretty neutral for Spain v Netherlands though.

Spain has been incredibly dull for some 4 years. I thought they played the best football of all teams in 2008 and thus I rooted for them back then, but at that Euro they had other cards to play, it wasn't just tiki taka ad nauseam. Tiki taka was a means to an end. They had the players to adjust the style somewhat depending on how the game was going.

They forgot all that as they believed their own hype, and focused on just one of their traits. As a result, they became very boring and not very efficient at scoring, but they still had a great defense and hardly lost a ball, so they still won.

By now, many key players were past it or in very bad shape. They remained just as boring and inefficient on the attack, but now their defense sucked. This was long coming, and I hope it'll open some eyes.

All this cr.p about Holland or the Netherlands... I've lived in multiple non-'Holland' parts of the country and never met someone who gave a toss about being called a Hollander.

Anyway, the Dutch again played like their typical selves against weak opponents: slow, and with an incredible amount of errors, and without inspiration. Luckily Memphis Depay didn't get the memo. Youngest ever Dutch goalscorer in the World Cup.

Cahill's stupid tackle that brought Depay on to the field probably cost Australia the game. Cahill probably should have got red carded as should have Van Persie for his second bad challenge which was much worse than the raised elbow of the first. Dutch improved 100 % when Depay came on and the coach changed their structure. Aussies go home with nothing but so far have been in two of the most entertaining games of the Cup. Many teams will be praying not to meet Chile in the second round. I also really liked the Italy England game, good football played by both sides.

Will Del Bosque stay on and who would replace him?

Valverde would be one of the names I think could do it.

Would've put him on the pitch at half time anyway
