One of the Costa Rican first names is 'Yeltsin'. :D

You know parents sometimes give their kids "heroes" names. And Yeltsin was a true one. Known all over the world for his heroics...

Sarcasm :D

Sarcasm kinda loses its sting if you write it below your post.

Back to soccer:
1.) Perfect: Game ejection, but no 10 vs 11 on red cards.
2.) Unfair. See just the too many wrong given penalty kicks (either intentionally, or b/c the ref is blind). Exchange them with a free kick like in any other part of the field. Nice side effect: I guess diving goes down a signifant number.
3.) Just get rid of those passive/ non-passive offsides. Keep it simple. And use technology for offsides. Since the linesmen simply can´t see it properly.
4.) Why? NASL tried game clocks. It worked almost* perfectly. (* They did make the mistake of going 90 mins real-time. They should have gone with 60).
Since game time is anyway around 55 minutes in nowadays matches (like this WC), make it 2x30. All stays almost the same, but no more time shaving and ref influence on game time.

You know I agree with almost all of this, but wanted to add some comments.

I think the biggest, and first thing they should do is address #3. As stuck in their old says MLB baseball was, they finally adopted technology, and it's been for the better with little distension.

Regarding #4 - High school soccer in the US has clocks that tick down, with the game moved along by the referees, and it works quite well.

Overtime in playoff matches need to be played out. Shootout penalty kicks are the worst way to end a match. Can we at least get power play overtimes? 10x9, then 9x8, etc. every few minutes? Eventually someone would score an actual goal.

I had warned you, we suck

Don´t play the "nervous Amsterhammer" ;) here.... Let me tell you: All is cool, ok. Pirlo will make one goal with a good free kick, or a deadliy pass assist. Didn´t know that guy until I saw him in ENG game with his unique look, and then free kick hammer hitting the post. He seems special. Who he plays for (in league)?

Cool. If it works in High school I see no reason why not in league matches. May one day Fifa will catch up. But that´s a big maybe...

Isn´t it grotesque that some games have 52 minutes (real) play-time while others have 58 or something. Imagine this in NFL. Or cycling; one rider is allowed to stop after 185 km, while the other must ride on for 197 kms...

While we agree on soccer most of times. I actually don´t agree on the penalty shoot-out after tie games. Actually that´s very exciting. I like that. OTOH, old NASL shoot-outs (dribbling from midfield one-vs-Goalie, like in Hockey) were also great. I can´t decide what´s better...

Ruiz was the best player of the Eredivisie when he played for Twente. I love his style, kind of similar to Pirlo's style (of course he's much better). Nice to see him score again. Failed at Fulham unfortunately, injured most of the time :( Really prone to injuries.

Italy not able to do any legal attack. Everything ends offsides or with a foul. :D

This is looking good for Costa Rica, but you never know with Italian teams.

0-1 or 1-1 doesn't matter for Italy though. They need a draw against Uruguay anyway to get through.

I AM ABSOLUTLY IN LOVE WITH THIS WOLRD CUP!

Costa Rica absolutly deserve to go through to the Knock Out Stages, better team in both matches.

If Italy can't raise their game tremendously they'll lose against Uruguay. If England AND Italy go out, it truly was a Group of Death!
