It is for me in the ZDF-Mediathek you can watch the replay from all sorts of angles. It's geo-restricted though.

Edit: Sorry, didn't know you didn't know the offside-rule.

No kidding here and now....
I saw the replay now, it looks very clearly offside. When the last pass came, the goal scorer was already one step behind the defender.

Can´t you just tell why this is no offsides when the pass comes with the defender being behind the receiver?

Just one post above mine which you replied to.

You're never offside if you're behind the ball.

Valbuena was behind the ball atm it left Giroud's foot.

While we agree on soccer most of times. I actually don´t agree on the penalty shoot-out after tie games. Actually that´s very exciting. I like that. OTOH, old NASL shoot-outs (dribbling from midfield one-vs-Goalie, like in Hockey) were also great. I can´t decide what´s better...
Were not you the one who told me that studies showed the way the keeper guessed had as much to do with stopping the kick as any skill? To me this would be like the NFL tied after overtime deciding the game on a Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

Yep. Correct. The Goalkeeper has to decide for one corner before the shot. If he would react to the corner after the shot leaves the shooters foot, it´s not enough time to react. The ball arrives faster at the goaline.
In short: It´s pure luck for the keeper. But the interresting thing is when shooters lose their nerves by either shooting the ball to the stars or wide like Vanderjagt.
Basically it´s short distance Field-Goal kicking with keepers sometimes standing in the way of the ball. :)

this one..

Clearly forgot that for the time being out of soccer... It really wasn´t in my mind anymore. So thanks for enlightning.

Oh my... two linesman have to watch the ball, players at different spots and if the ball goes lateral in a split second. No surprise this whole offside rule is one big mess (it gets even more crazy when active and inactive offside is included). It really needs to change, or circa 7 refs/umps should be in play for correct execution of rules.

This rule is thougher than the two-strike-Foul-Ball rule in Baseball. Actually this only "difficult" Baseball rule is pretty easy to absorb once you got the rules (takes some one less than a week I would estimate).

The only problem I see about the offside rule is fans and media taking it way too serious when the attacker is offside one leg and half a shoulder and the linesman doesn't see it. They should cut the refs some slack with these close calls.

I personally find it more disturbing when scored goals are not given because the linesmen thought the offensive player was inches offsides, when in reality he didn´t see it, but guessed (wrong very often).

Argh,i hate these french guys but this was a public execution, maybe Switzerland should think a bit about this multi-kulti thing, perhaps they push it way too far.

This. The worst of it is that they are supposed to give 'the benefit of the doubt' to the attacker, but in practice that never happens. Simple solution, of course, would be a video ref. Offside is only flagged if it is absolutely clear, say a body's width. All close calls are allowed to proceed, and if a goal directly ensues from the attack, the video ref either confirms offside, or not. This could be done in less time than goal celebrations.

I hope is not a replay of last night game Japan vs Greece because that one was beyond terrible.

Bolded: Absolute true.

Great ideas BTW.
Us old NFLers know the advantages of replay (OFC we also know some blind zebras don´t even see it correct then, but overall it´s a sucsess), but FIFA took decades to only get the goaline cam in. So wait another 40 years for more improvement...

Didn't watch last night luckily.

But Honduras can't get worse than in their first game.

Neutral, but lets have some goals.

Got a chuckle out of that. I saw that you called a five game goal a few pages back--well done!

It seems France and Spain have traded spots from WC 2010. France/Germany might be the highlight of the tournament. (Barring whatever extra-curricular wackiness Suarez will come up with, of course.)

Probably, could be a great QF (?) game. Nerve wrecking.

Do you have a call on tonight's match?

No, the governing bodies should use technology for offside, which is there.

10 times as many goals get incorrectly disallowed for being offside than goals disallowed cos the referee didn't see the ball cross the line.

I'm all for technological assistance, but as long as it's not used, people shouldn't be too harsh on the refs if they make a wrong call by a couple of inches.
