Best German GC rider since Ulrich?
That probably was Klöden.

But apart from Klöden, there is also not much competition. You had Jaksche at the same time but already levels below. Then you had years where Gerdemann and transforming Martin were the best hopes. Obviously Buchmann in recent years with his 4th but a whole different level that we see today.

So yes, indeed already among the best GC riders from Germany.

Yeah, I'm all about the Lipowitz hypetrain but right now he is still miles behind Klöden in terms of GC potential/level.
Klöden was a one week stage race killer and with better team strategy should've probably had one Tour victory (2006) and if he weren't such a selfless "dont give a feck, just pay me and I'll do whatever job" rider would've had more GT palmares in terms of podiums/higher classification positions.

I'd also be slightly cautious if Lipowitz can really keep this up for the whole Tour because Denk once again confirmed yesterday that his training and plan was structured to peak at the Dauphine and he is basically just carrying his form over. So let's see.
What's good about him that his base level is already incredible high and there's still a lot of room for improvement. Both in terms of tactical race savviness (so far he races like a dog chasing frisbees) as well as in specific abilities, his kick is pretty terrible, his puncheur level very mid and just from eye test I also don't think his cadence is great the way he is grinding.
What he is already really good at is his pacing strategy, both in ITTs as well as on climbs and overall he seems to have the right enthusiasm for the sport.

That was a pretty dumb move, if its really true that he was peaking for the Dauphine without reason pretty much, just to face Pogacar and Vinge there lol...

Think he can either try to become an elite TT rider or get a somewhat better punch.

The cycling hype is definitely back in Germany. He's definitely having a strong year and a really great Tour. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he can keep it up until the end, even if his form was planned for the Dauphine.
The pressure will of course increase after that. But he seems to be able to handle it well. For the future, he needs to become a bit more powerful for attacks oder steeper, short hills, then you can look very positively at what he can still achieve.

Maybe joining the sport late and therefore having his breakthrough in his mid 20s rather than as a 19 year old will be a benefit to him as far as being able to handle media pressure.

What do you think he can realistically achieve beyond a podium at the TdF?
