He also says Wiggins isn't a chrono specialist? I'm not so sure about that. Didn't he win A giro TT stage? and is current Brit champ..

Maybe Wiggins isnt an ITT specialist and I'm missing something here.

I'm British and want to see all British riders do well. I also think Froome is a big talent and was referred to, along with Thomas and Kennaugh as Sky's 'British winner of the TDF in five years' statement.

However, his perfomances so far have taken me by surprise, massively. Although as pointed out, he has shown glimpses of performances in mountains and ITT's I think this is something different.

The signs suggest he's now illness free (he had 'Biharzia' -a water born parasite) and has built himself up to the best form of his life. I expect him to drop away in the next week or so which is why the questions of who the team leader at Sky is are a little premature. He has a habit of performing really well and then having 1 or 2 really bad days. Maybe that was the result of the parasite he had.

I genuinely felt he was capable of riding top 20 in the Vuelta at the start but working for Brad meant he wouldn't get the chance. However, this is his breakthrough; his big chance. I really hope he can hang on to a top 10 or top 15 on GC.

I like the comparison with Pierre Roland. Very similar past performances, working for a team leader at a GT and finding themselves high on GC themselves.

It'll be great watching how he gets on over the rest of the race.

Yup, and to think, with all this knowledge about Froome, you have to think Sky made a massive mistake turning him down for a job. He could have been the marginal gain they were looking for.

So yes, you told us so, but then you also told us that G was the one sky were focussing on to be their first grand tour winner, but then you also told us it was Kennaugh the younger they were grooming for stardom

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Rolland was actually known to be a big climbing talent. Froome... maybe in the UK, but for anyone else he looked to be a good domestique in the making.

Exactly. Maybe with a UK magnifying glass I could have spotted his amazing talent, but I don't own that.

lol ohhh a 22nd place. yup GT talent. Pretty sure there is only one ignorant muppet in this thread.

no, Froome in 2008 Queen Stage at TDF. he was with the front group over all passes.

This is indeed a natural progression had he been gifted the favoured son status of a national, say, a Bauke Mollema.

Does anyone raise an eyebrow at Porte.

Froome is much classier than Porte.

No one cares about Porte's lack of history.

Go look at the results from martin/mollema in comparison. They have great results in other smaller races and thus progression like this is expected, froome not at all.

anyway not many here even rate porte, in fact before giro (without giro) no many even knew who he was, even less so. Just like froome it took some ridiculous surprising GT performance for the hype. So your point... moot.

and lool. I forgot froome wasn't the golden boy, I mean there are so many talented GC hopes from his nation so it is natural that he gets forgotten.. OH WAIT. Just like GBR Holland only had Gesink with real GT results on the board, so is his situation any different.

Of course if you mean mollema had actually shown consistent performances elsewhere and had showed promise then I would agree. Unlike froome ;)

exactly, rolland had a lot of hype in the past.
His talent was displayed at times..

This tour wasn't such a... WTF rolland...? It was more like, WTF Rolland.... is actually delivering for once??

not a good comparison at all imo.

I dont think anybody in the UK is saying Froome is the next Miguel Indurain, Hinault or anything- Just that he has capabilities at ITT and can climb on occasions.

Blackat is talking crap in the main though.:)

He finished 5th on a mountain stage. However, that mountain stage saw a big group together that then split in crosswinds on a less steep section. Such a situation is perhaps more suited to tters who are very good climbers rather than climbing specialists. Maybe not that surprising then that someone like Rodriguez wasnt able to stay up there given that? Its not the equivalent to coming 5th up alpe d'huez. TTed well but Cancellara looked out of form, Wiggins faded, no Millar, Contador, Evans. Menchov didnt do that well. Results were still surprising but perhaps not as extreme as it may at first seem.

With regard to Rolland, he finished about 20th in the tour in 2009 and the tour that year was not a good one for climbers. Didnt do well last year but maybe it takes some time to find the training regime that works best for a rider? This year he continued his progress from the tour in 2009.

His climbing and TT abilities seem to have taken Sky by surprise too.

Otherwise they'd have renewed his contract.

They've been negotiating since the Tour de France. They also wouldn't have made him Brad's last man if they didn't rate him highly.

Does the emergence of Froomey signify the beginning of the British Mafia on CN forums?

When its set up i nominate Alex Dowsett to be the honoury President because of his Essex gangster style accent.

I'll join as long as I'm allowed to leave at any time without my family getting shot.

So it would have come as a surprise when he did. So your sentence should have started, "Well yes..."

As for his protracted contract, why is the negotiation so complicated? Or has the negotiation been Froome asking whether he's going to be offered a contract and Sky telling him they'll decide once they've talked to all the HTC guys?

Look, if Nicolas Roche spent a final climb on the front in a Grand Tour MTF stage and proceeded to ride the likes of Scarponi, JRod, Anton etc off his wheel then people would rightly regard that as surprising. And Roche has a climbing record orders of magnitude better than Froome.
Roche started out as a puncheur/srpinter.

Roche's first good rides, well behind Froome in 08 Tour

no. inverse dutch auction. Lots of riders on the market.

less money for froome, cos 2mill gbp and 2mill gbp per annum to Wigans and Hobbit is alot of moneyfrom Murdoch when he fracked a lot of cats in the UK in the last year

And yet, Roche came 13th in the 2008 Vuelta, which is quite superior to anything Froome did in 2008-2009. Hell, Froome was 81st in that 2008 Tour. Last year Allan Davis was 26th on Cotobello and 39th at the Bola del Mundo, and no one's claiming he's potentially a great climber just because he had good form here and there.
