Chris Froome: 37,343

•Justin Rose: 9,833
•Ian Bell: 5,626

Crushing win for Murray in % terms, but Wiggins actually polled 90,000 more votes to win in 2012 where over 1.6m people voted. I guess the high voting numbers was down to the Olympic year effect.

Not sure which are the two you haven't heard of, but sixth is actually higher than I expected for him.

You'll know Murray. Leigh Halfpenny was the rugby union full back whose near flawless kicking ensured a Lions victory down in Australia; AP McCoy is a previous SPOTY winner who rode his 4000th winner this year; Mo Farah gets mentioned on here a lot so I'm sure you've heard of him; and Ben Ainslie is a multi gold medal winning Olympian who was part of the Americas Cup team that came from nothing to winning. I would have thought Ohurugo would have beaten Froome too, but I guess the athletics fans all voted for Mo.

All the Scots voted for Murray, all the Welsh for Halfpenny, and all the irish for McCoy. meanwhile, the African vote was split between Farah (Somalian), Froome (Kenyan), Rose (S Africa) :p

Ian Bell got a lot of votes:D

I think a lot of people voted for Murray (not just scots/ he couldnt get such a high vote just on scots) because he is the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry, and Wimbledon has a massive profile in the UK, the US open or the Olympics does not compare.

What lucky break in 2009? Wiggins didnt get into no break.

Blame faulty memory.
Not only was it an echelon not a break (Stage 3) and Wiggo was the wrong side of it.

In the end he finished 4th on the road (3 after Lance's removal) by just a few secs from Frank. Without a detailed analysis, which I will do later and post, he gained time on Frank on the ITT, and TTT. Lost time on some mountains.

In no way was a 2009 Wiggo even close to Contador of that era.

I'm surprised Froome got that many votes. Perhaps Walsh did a fairly good job afterall.

Cound got sore fingers after dialing the number for the 38,000th time

Yes he gained time on Frank Schleck in the tt, and lost time in the mountains.

Just like Ullrich gained time on Pantani in the tt and lost time in the mountains.

Don't understand what the point is there. GTs contain both mountains and tts. Some gt riders perform slightly better at one than the other or vice versa. So?

I'm struggling to see what your point is. Wiggins wasn't close to 2009 Contador. Nor was Frank Schleck - he doped. Nor was Andreas Kloeden - also doped. Alejandro Valverde either. Denis Menchov. Danilo Di Luca wouldn't have stood a chance. Mikel Astaraloza was actually caught doping that Tour and he wasn't close to Contador. Nor was Franco Pellizoti who lost his TDF result due to the blood passport.

What does "not being close to Contador" mean when every single other doper in the race got outperformed by Wiggins (yes Armstrong also got outperformed by Wiggins and only finished higher because of the ttt).

Even with the TTT, Armstrong only finished on the podium due to the echelon-break he was in. No echelons = Wiggo podium (even with the TTT results)

Froome has never lived in Britain. No-one beyond a few dedicated fans would have heard of him pre-2011. He races with a Zimbabwe flag on his bike. Frankly I'm surprised the Daily Mail hasn't launched on one of it's 'Plastic Brit' diatribes. No surprises not many voted for him.

And Murray isn't the most popular sportsman in England. I imagine the entirety of Scotland voted for him though.

Why a Zimbabwe flag

You know phrased like that, it does give one pause for thought.

Not that it matters much, the only name on the SPOTY shortlist I didn't recognition is Hannah Cockcroft, I did have to search to find what she does.

Which I guess illustrates just how little media attention disabled sports gets.

i was just posting Digger's tweet to Fran

Bet Fran Millar will not respond.:D

The only response she has is to call Digger by his real name, which he has no problem with.

Michelle Cound called him by his name last week, but I forgot his name. I don't know who he is. Journalist? Writer? Former rider?

He is an ordinary Joe in Ireland. A cycling fan. Not a journo, nor a writer or a former rider. It is somewhere on his twitter feed history.

"I really do think the best thing to do with the whole doping culture of the sport, to move past that image that we've had in the past, is to talk about it," said Froome.

"Be completely open and say: 'Listen, this was is what happened in the sport back then but it's definitely not happening any more, and these are the reasons.'

"It needs to be talked about and we need to move on from that.

"But there is going to be a point when enough is enough, and we need to get on and start talking about the good things in the sport and the great racing that's getting missed now because we're harping on about what happened 10 years ago."

Froome needs to work on his omerta. He cant use the same excuse for every situation.

So funny when he says these are the reasons! what reasons, because Brailsford and Walsh say so!:D
