While you understand it so well that you think that the team which had the winning rider 'did absolutely nothing right in this Paris Roubaix'.

I suspect if Garmin-C had come 1st, 2nd and 3rd you would have lambasted them for not coming 4th too.

Damn it, the only reason Cancellara almost closed the gap is because Garmin had someone chasing the Vansummeren group. Cancellara made it clear that he WAS NOT going to work anymore without help from Garmin or others.

Thor rode like a punk. Garmin chased their guy because they had no faith in him.

A tactic is good or bad regardless of the outcome, and winning doesn't turn a bad move into a good one, it just turns it into a lucky one. I don't necessarily agree with DT that Garmin's tactics sucked (I'm undecided about that point), but I certainly can't agree with those claiming anything goes as long as you win. Because some day luck won't be on the team's side, and they'll have to rely on tactics, not on sheer dumb luck.

he is right.

thor wasnt wheel sucking because of van summeren. if thor wanted good team work, he would go to the leading group to be with his 2 teammates. that was canc's fear (and he was ready to fight even in that sitiuation). however thor was wheel sucking simply because he was afraid even in that sitiuation.

van summeren's strenght was garmim's luck.

one more lap and it was it.

If QS had not crashed out, Garmin would have been left holding their d!cks. Can we please stop praising that sideburned d-bag Vaughters? The guy's "tactics" almost chased down the winner. Seriously, lucky break doesn't even begin to describe what Garmin caught today. Despite their lameness, they won the day.

Congrats to JVS. Middle finger to JV and TH.

Garmin managed things pretty well today.

The presence of Hushovdt and Ballan on his wheel convinced Cancellara to return to the chasing bunch when he still had anough time to catch the 3 remaining breakaways (abut 10k to go?)

The earlier work that the Garmin guy (forget his name) did to drag Cancellara and Hushovdt towards the front looked more significant than it was. More like Chavennels effort in the Finale of Flanders. He was not exactly soft pedalling but it was almost better to have his best effort dragging the Cancellara group than having Cancellara at his own pace. You can see this because Fletcha gets dropped but the Garmin rider slows things up enough to let him back on.

Lets see Garmin chased when JVS was in a group of 10 riders, was JVS attacking this group, driving the group, NO, he was covering the moves to ensure Garmin always had a presence at the front. JVS was riding a defensive role in the lead group as Hushovd was behind, i.e he was riding for his team leader. When JVS finally got away in a smaller group with a better chance of winning, did Garmin chase. NO.

The reason Hushovd didnt ride with Cancellara was clearly not to expend energy and instead force Cancellara to do the work when it was just 3 riders. Hushovsd still wanted to get up to the front group thus he used his team to do so, the front group was still quite large at that point so there was no gurantee JVS was the strongest. Only when JVS get away with a few riders did it become more obvious. At this point Garmin didnt chase and instead backed JVS.

As far as I am concerned Garmin, including JVS rode for Hushovd until it became obvious JVS could actually win himself and Cancellara was out of contention. JVS was the perfect joker. Everyone talks about how strong he was but how many people on here had backed him even as an outside bet beforehand.

People are claiming Garmin should have backed JVS but when did it become obvious he actually had a good chance of winning.

The reason Garmin chased was to put pressure on the front group to keep working. JVS could sit and cover moves up front (and eventually attack) and Thor could sit and cover Cancellara.

i'm a little confused by the multitude of contrasting opinions though i did watch the race for 5 hours...

gormin's man who was send by the team in an early break away has won.

why does this tactic despite the century-old veracity suddenly look stupid ?

yes, we saw garmin men on the front of the main peloton...but did they chase hard or were they just controlling the peloton for their own good ?

did the gap decisively dwindle as any frantic chase would imply ?

i haven't seen that.

what i did see was that garmin had multiple cards to play and they did play them. the reason it worked may not necessarily be the tribute to the brilliance of their teamwork but rather the fact they in a monument racelike P-R, the lady luck is often on the side of those who flirt with her the most.

garmin certainly did it's share and set the race on fire. thus they deserve the win. JV or not...

A great race today and a worthy winner. Some of the attitudes on here make me wonder how many of you guys race. I'd sit on Cancallera if i could, he's shown he's the strongest, and the peloton knows that if you try ride with him you die(Boonen in flanders?), in order to beat Cancellara, you first need to isolate him, then get him to do the chasing, so he uses as much energy as possible. This has happened in flanders and P-R and both times he was beaten....just.
