But one Monument Classic would outdo all of the wins Team Sky have to date

In what dreamworld would be need to be in for garmin to win a monument?

Interesting interview today where he discussed last years tour.

To roughly paraphrase, he didnt build his year around the tour, and didnt even know he would be going, and when he did go he went as support to C VDV. On stage 4 he lost fourty seconds by being in the second group but he never attempted to get onto the main group because he didnt think 40 seconds would matter, he thought he was there to support.

In the end he missed the podium by how many seconds?

Enough to not be standing on it.

That reminds me that when Farrar won Vattenfall, cyclingnews actually referred to the race as a monument.

Ya, I would say that that's a symptom of the old World Cup. Since the biggest monuments were also World Cup races the newer World Cup races sort of get lumped into the same category by association.

They ought to bring the World Cup back in my opinion. That was much more interesting than the ProTour.

Agreed, the ProTour is absolute shiite. Who won last year? I have no idea. Nor the year before that.

However, I still remember Museeuw, Bartoli and Tchmil fighting it out in the mid to late 90's. It made that collection of 1 day races 10x more exciting and gave 1 day riders the chance to shine year round.

7th place suddenly became important if the other guy finished 12th. Could the rouleur score points in the hilly race to hold onto his lead?

That dimension of the "Classics" is now gone. Yay ProTour! The stage racers can now dominate another multiday event.

(had to look it up...ValPiti, Oil for Drugs, the girl from Australia and the little runt who can time trial...an exciting bunch)

Great support he was, knew there was a break about to go was riding in support of his leader and failed to mention it and have them both move forward. Out of interest did he ride on the front to bring that gap down? I imagine a domestique would do that sort of thing.

Most of the monuments are controlled by RCS/Unipublic/ASO anyway, so the World Cup comeing back wouldn't be that great.

Also, just looked up Cadel's results in his PT winning year. The only thing he did was come 2nd in the Dauphine

Unless you count 2nd in the tour de france and 4th in vuelta, which were included in the points that year

Just to re-open old wounds I think we could use an update. Garmin 13-Sky 11. Garmin also has the slight edge in quality of victories (2 Giro stages, 2 Cali stages, Scheldeprijs and 3 Days of De Panne overall vs. Het Nieuwsblad, Giro stage, Tirreno stage, Paris-Nice stage and Picardie overall). Garmin also has the edge in year-to-date CQ ranking (7th 3206 pts. vs. 15th 2742). Looking at the quality of additional major podium finishes they seem to me to be pretty equal: Garmin has podiums in Amstel Gold, California and Het Nieuwsblad against Sky's Paris-Roubaix, E3 and Tour Down Under.

All-in-all I feel that I'm winning in my pick of Garmin as the better results getting team.

I don't want to hear about podiums. Who races for the podium? Losers.

Victory or Death.

A single quality win is worth more than a 1000 quality podiums.

Anyone want to change their vote yet? Both have had terrible Tours. Garmin was decimated by injuries losing their top two riders and Millar broke some ribs (though they still have a shot at the top 10) and Sky has just been a terrible team.

No reason to change the vote there. Team Rice Cakes and Whale Blubber are still well in the lead.

GRM has had a comparable Tour to its first two participations. Which is really impressive given their 3 key players have suffered injuries and they have lost 3 guys to injuries.

I think the team has shown real depth to fight back given the big hit they took to these key players. Whereas SKY haven't done as good a job rallying since Wiggins has failed to live up to expectations. For me this shows GRM are a better team.

More pragmatically if you look at CQranking they are also ahead of SKY in total points and the teams are tied in terms of season victories. Looking at the more official (but worse imho) UCI World Ranking GRM is ahead of SKY too.

So, GRM.

For a first year team SKY have done really well, and if EBH had not been injured so much this year I think we may be looking at a different situation.
