It's been one week of the ugliest most miserable weather I've experienced during summer. I haven't been able to ride since saturday and finally decided to get off the couch and go swimmig since the water is always warm at the indoor pool close to the office. Then I found out it is closed until september.

This morning I called a work mate here at my office. They fail to tell me I am on speaker phone. We start talking about some work items that have gone wrong. I tell him that the two people who sit in the office next to his are to blame. Then I decide it would sound better if I call them "Iron face" and "Magnetic Crotch" …….. They were in the same room when I made the comment! Oh NO.

I am sure HR will call soon.

Not sure this is the place for this, but it made me sad and upset.

Just saw on twitter, Contador Notebook, that The Swordsman passed away. I enjoyed many of his posts. I will miss the random information he posted.

Always sad to me when someone passes before their time!

RIP Swordsman.

Cancer

Wife of a good employee (and friend) just diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Surgery, radiation every day for 6 weeks (which is a 50 mile drive from their home), chemo, 50%+ survival chance. Continuing to work will be very difficult for her, but without that income I doubt they'll be able to make mortgage payments. It takes a year before disability kicks in. Three year old daughter. Death and homelessness. All my problems are suddenly nothing. Going out to ride my bike.

With such ****ty welfare support for people in desperate times, I'm guessing you are in the US.

Best of luck and wishes to your friends. (Such news really does help with perspective, doesn't it?)

rickshaw, have you guys considered organizing a fundraiser of some sort to help them out? I don't have much money to donate, but I'm sure I could spare a little bit.

We have been looking at some fund raising activities. Right now its so early in the process no one really knows all the implications. Neither one of them are originally from around here, and "here" is less than 5000 population, both of these complicate things. She has health care, but her company is not a supportive one. The stresses and pressures of having your whole world turned upside down, your own future suddenly a black cloud, life itself in question, your loved ones. Its hard to comprehend. A little time is needed to have things come into focus.

An a big thanks for your expression of generosity.

Since this is a "complaint" thread, does that mean no good news can be posted?

Hey dude who sits across the hall from me at work... When you go take a break, come back 20 mins later with that cheap cologne smelling up the hallway, polluting the air all the way to my office, you are not covering the smoke smell! In fact the cologne/smoke smell is the worst combo! Please stop putting that cheap cologne on so strong it announces your presence 10 minutes before you arrive!

That 20min break isn't to meet his paramour???

My local 1 in 20 climb.

Today showers had been forcast ...but Chris and I had agreed to ride. So early start...damp roads (light overnight showers or heavy dew... not sure which). Was chilly so well rugged up. Road bike still not in action so mtb it was.

Met Chris prior to our usual meet... we were both running a couple of minutes late. I soon discoved that I would have to work just to keep up with Chris in cruise mode. This was confirmed on the approach to the Basin as Chis easily pulled out a 100m gap up a sharp pinch.

At the Basin (start of 6.8km 4.5% climb), Chris gave me a substantial start and then passed me (I was sitting on about 14km/h) about 2km into the climb. By the false flat (3km) I was working hard only managing 20km/h on the last (easiest) section of the false flat. After the ff my speed was down to 12km/h and dropping, by 2km to go I was working super hard and speed was down to 9km/h...I was %^&*^*&%! I have looked down to observe my rear tyre was flat...no bloody wonder it was so hard!

I could not remove the tyre (usually don't need tyre levers...well not this time fella). Chris eventually returned from the summit...sometime later...glass splinter removed...further delay $20 note sleeved the tyre...new tube...reinflate tyre....!@#$@$!% faulty valve! Descend hill...stop...reinflate...repeat..........

Eventually I ran/walked the last 1.5km back to The Basin...Bike shop shut! Cafe (has tubes for when bike shop shut) only has road tubes...Bike shop only carries road tubes...no demand for mtb tubes...even though he sells mtbs!

Fellow cyclist supplies puncture repair...Chris and I have drinks and raisin toast before I resume repairs.(So it was not all bad!)

Also learnt that pliers would have enabled swapping out valve (so another lesson...again not all bad!).

Anyway, can grin about it now and does pale into insignificance compared to many of above.

That's harsh to put somebody out on their **** just because they have cancer. A couple of years ago on a local radio station, they were able to raise more than $60,000 for a family after the mother died of cancer and her husband deteriorated mentally and as a result took to a whole box of sleeping pills as he couldn't cope with his wife's death.

I'm not sure what it's like in the States, but here in Australia, if a company did that (ie out of a job), they would be doing well not to be facing some serious legal action as it is illegal to do so (ie being very sick and not have a job as a result).

Like I said, my offer still stands.

THe first operation has been very successful and now they're waiting for more tests to see if maybe it is not as bad as oringinally thought.

Here in the Best of All Possible Places in the World (ahem), unemployment insurance is paid out if you are laid off, or continue to not be able to find a job.... but only for a fixed amount of time. If you CAN'T work, because of cancer or something, then Social Security disability is supposed to cover you, expect it takes a year, oh an BTW, the SS Disability fund may well be empty in a few years. The ultra rich keep telling us through the right wing media they own that "We have the best health care in the world! Look at all the new expensive hospitals! Look at all that expensive equipment! Look at all those expensive Doctors!" Makes me sick... but I'm self employed so I pay for my own health insurance, and if I really get sick, next year the rates will go through the roof. Now about $800 per month with huge deductible.

They deny just about everybody first off. It took me 3 years to get SSDI. When I got it I received a check for 3 years of payments. Really you need an SSDI attorney they get 15% but worth it. I luckily got a good firm to represent me.

OUr 16-year-old son was hit in the face by a football hooligan yesterday on his way to the Bundesliga game. The police know who did it and are expectd to take action this week.

The stadium doctor and the doctor at the hospital emergency room where I took him last night both said it may or may not be broken. Looks like we are off to a specialist tomorrow.

Susan

Anybody remember this? He subsequently underwent surgery on his nose.

Well, the police called today. The guy wants to apologize. Actually what he wants is that his stadium ban be shortened, and he was told that an apology was the minimum he had to do.

After thinking about the whole thing, I have realized I am not the "forgive and forget" type.

He hits my son so hard that he needs surgery, and then thinks he can say "sorry about that" and have his penalty reduced? I don't think so.....

Fair call.....

Good on you Susan.

His apology is not out of concern for your son, or any sense of contrition, but out of his own self-interest, so he can go back and create havoc and appear to be the "big man" in front of his hooligan mates.

I would not be the "forgive & forget" type either if faced with that situation.

Perhaps you are the "forgive and forget" type when there is genuine regret and repentance involved.

Yeah it seems like the D-bag is more concerned about his season ticket, and since the season just started, he doesn't like to be standing on the sidelines. Not hanging out with your hooligan buddies to plan your next charge is serious business! He feels left out...

PS> why is there no US Open or grand slam thread? Or is there?

I would like to complain about the title of this thread, I mean I would like complain about Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi, but he is only a colonel, not a general so I can not complain about him in the general complaint thread.

Exactly this. The guy is a 29-year-old private security guard, he ought to know better. I agree, he just wants to go party and drink with his friends again.

He was given a three-year nationwide stadium ban as of the date of the incident (May 2010). So if it was rescinded now, he would have served not quite half and would have missed just a bit more than one full season.

Makes me glad that I don't live in the States. I broke my collarbone in May and I was able to go a Temporary Disability Allowance through Centrelink (the Australian Government's organization that takes care of all Social Security matters) and it took a couple of weeks for everything to be sorted, and I ended up getting back paid as well. That and I was lucky that my brother was kind enough to help me out.

I'm amazed it wasn't longer (ie a life ban).

You should have accepted his excuse, combined with him buying a season ticket for your son - and then break his nose after he handed it out. lol :D

Which match was it actually?

I hope your son recovers soon and good luck with it. Like you I doubt that man is really sorry for it. You must be an idiot if you do this, he deserves a life time stadium ban and nothing less.
