This years Volta a Portugal seems to be another borefest or Veloso-Marque showdown with the overused stages of the last editions beeing used again. Volta do Futuro features a stage to Oliveira do Hospital with the steep climb of Santa Ovaia, there will be a mtf on Alto de São Macário and a difficult stage to Oliveira de Azeméis. All these stages look better than what Gomes just presented.

Nobody's stopping you

One of the problems is that because the TdF is so all-consuming, if you try and discuss other races it just gets buried under the Tour avalanche. A lot of the time people just don't bother.

The colombian team recently announced its lineup. Sebastian Henao is in it...A guy who already has been top 10 on GT climbing stages.

A really silly and strange change.

What is the point of allowing world tour riders? It's meant to be a race for young riders.

Nowadays anyway. I thought it was U23 now, as opposed to the U27 Girobio. Still, though intended for young riders it did used to just be an open race, specifically with reference to the Eastern Bloc riders like Sukhoruchenkov and Olaf Ludwig winning it, but also more notoriously with reference to Laurent Fignon winning it in 1988.

Is Team Alonso never going to happen then? It would suit Nibali quite well to go there, maybe not an all-Italian team but it will have many Italians, Paolo Bettini as a coach and a more relaxed environment than Vino.
