I think the contract for 2016 is already fine

do the local news say something about 2017?

Vague about years, only says that will remain World Tour opener in January. Here's the presser from the TDU website.

I don't know if this matter has been already posted, but some things are finally starting to move in the right direction in Spain.

The UCI has reserved for next year in the UCI Europe Tour calendar days 3-7 of February for the celebration of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (2.1).

This classic stage race which dates back to 1929, had it's last edition in 2008. Apparently, a business group led by Ángel Casero (yes, him) and his brother is trying to gather enough sponsorship money to launch a full 5 day continental race, including an ITT. TV coverage is desired but unlikely.

The location is ideal for the time of the year that it would be raced, as many WT Teams are concentrated in the Valencia, Alicante area and nearby Catalunya and Baleares.

Also, it would complete a very nice Spanish early season chain of consecutive races: the Mallorca january races, then Comunitat Valenciana, then Murcia-Almería and then Andalucía, located in the nice weathered Mediterranean coasts.

I'd consider moving it back a little in the calendar, perhaps by one week.
That's a tricky call, because the race falls on the last week of the summer school holidays and there is a national public holiday on the 26th of January. This, along with the race's proximity to Adelaide helps with good crowd numbers.

The amount of people who fly in from interstate is impressive and it's easy to take the whole family because you can spend the morning lying on the beach and the afternoons out watching the race. Also, if you have kids that don't want to come along or your S.O. doesn't like cycling it's easy to get out by yourself, especially if you take a bike. None of the starts or finishes are more than 50-60 kms from the Adelaide CBD.

Don't see this posted anywhere so apologies if i'am blind.

Just read on twitter that London despite of applying first instance, in the end declined to host the grand depart offered by ASO in 2017.

Apparently it was due to financial issues as transport for London pulled the plug.

So 2nd choice Germany for 2017 it is then

They also started broadcasting again didn't they.

Since there hasn't been a tour stage in germany for 10 years then probably the return to tv-broadcasting makes them a possibility again.

Still this can't be fun for neither ASO looking to build on momentum, or Germany being the best of the rest.

There were some pretty major financial issues with the Welcome to Yorkshire bid. The government had to step in to fill a pretty significant gap in funding with security costs rising sharply among other things. I think it's a smart decision by TfL. After all, it was only last year that the Tour visited London.

Tomorrow there is an important press conference from Etixx Quickstep about the future of the team
at 11:00u. I think: news about a new sponsor and WHR attack Tony Martin..

Or maybe something else? New big signing?

Source: Jeroen Vanbelleghem: "Morgen om 11u belangrijke persconferentie @Etixx_QuickStep over toekomst ploeg. Mijn gok? Werelduurrecord poging T. Martin & nieuwe sponsor."

Re: the grand depart, London really should have done it's homework beforehand and I do think Germany makes more sense, there's a number of German talent and teams rising, tv growth and will be easy to give a local a chance to wear yellow in front of the home fans.

I dont think it was a case of lack of homework, more the fact that the new government are having to cut back massively with thier new budget. It means that money that may have been there for 2017 now won't be, and also the huge loss Yorkshire made putting on the grand depart was the final straw.

Well yes, that's what I meant by homework and why it would have made more sense to plan it once a proper appraisal had been carried out and funding was more secure.

I get your point, however I'm sure I read that the deadline was recently so they had to put the bid in, and the funding would have been in place until the new budget cuts have been released.
