It's all part of the germanic family language group.
English and Dutch have many similar words. English probably use the word citizen more cause they were conquered by the french at 1 point.

Budget cap idea by the UCI a non-starter....

(original article in French) https://www.ouest-france.fr/sport/c...as-rendu-858d9ce4-bec4-11f0-a083-858f2b6e92c2
Professional cycling teams refused to sign up to a budget cap, the UCI's president has revealed, adding that he feels they were "wrong" to do so.

In an interview with French newspaper Ouest-France, published on Wednesday, David Lappartient said he "remained convinced" that a financial restriction would help the sport. .... "The big teams have very large budgets, and as a result, where before a relatively small sum could be enough to achieve a decent result, today you're just a bystander," Lappartient told Ouest-France. "We considered implementing a 'budget cap' for all the teams, and paradoxically, the teams didn't accept it. I was surprised that it was mostly the smaller teams that refused. I think they were wrong because it seems necessary to level the playing field."

England has never been conquered by the French, they were Normans from the Duchy of Normandy, after all we'd never have had the 100 year war with them if they had done ;)

we'd never call anyone a citizen,, subjects maybe, we'd still call them burghers, but i dont the g should be as hard as it would be with more germanic languages

Normans were frenchies (with a viking dash). But you can have the semantics if that makes you feel better :)

Anyone seen the new Red Bull TT green tunnel? Looks cool and all. And TT wise interesting. Most of bike riding is done on a regular bike though.

There wasn’t much to France in 1066, so no the Normans were not Frenchies.

Looks cool indeed.
I wonder if race organizers could do something like that in an evening prologue (or inside a building).
Then showing each riders in slow-mo passing through.
I know it's just a gimmick, but it would really add some good visuals for TTs if done right.

There is a line of thinking that says Normans were Viking descendents (Nordmen).
Vikings settled in french territories to face off against further viking raids. The majority of the people living there were french. By the time of the invasion they had intermarried. They spoke french, used european style ships, ... . Now i understand you prefer the semantics of them being somewhat independent (even if they nominally paid homage). In that case, the norman invasion force consisted of Normans, french, bretons and people from flanders.

Uhm... guys... I wasn't expecting you guys to have a whole-frikking linguistic debate because of my silly comment about always thinking about food...
