That's not what the article is saying...

"We did perform some tests at the Mapei Sport Center after the Giro and found that he had signs of a viral infection from earlier in the year," said team doctor Max Testa in the team communication. "But everything now is normal."

So the doctor says that Hushovd is healthy now, the virus is already gone. But BMC reckons that he doesn't have the form anyway.

Indeed I get the feeling you are right.
Yeh Hushovd does seem to be trying to make an excuse with
""I needed more time to recover and it's always been a goal of mine to do well at the Olympics,"

So I think that this was the factor which pushed BMC to finally decide he is not going, but it was certainly not the only factor and he probably wouldnt have got picked anyhow.

He needs races to regain/find some kind of form but BMC rightly weren't going to waste a spot at the tour for this.

The first of my many pre tdf transfers out of my fantasy team in the first week in June.

He was worth more than Cav.
Cav will announce that he's skipping the Tour as well by the end of the week. Stay tuned.

As it seems right now, it was BMC who chose to omit him from the team. Hushovd wanted to ride, as expressed in the NRK interview from a couple of days ago.
Interesting to see that BMC website has crashed with this news - from Twitter

'BMC Racing Team‏@BMCProTeam

@melissagerman Our website seems to be under duress due to the Thor Hushovd announcement. Please check back later'.

Hushovd vs Boonen.

Prepare for an epic battle ( unless if Hushovd is completely out of form ). Any other big names going to Poland?
With Boonen and Hushovd out, it will be interesting to see how many others join them now. The green jersey competition is definitely devalued. Might as well give it to Cav now for just turning up.

According to this article in Hushovds norwegian local paper in Norway , Jim Ochowicz says it was never an option for Hushovd to start the tour in his former condition. They says his spring season has been very bad, and the feared something was serious wrong with him.
The main target now is to get him back in good shape for the rest of the season. He preformed a test on sunday which did not give any good answer so the final decision was made for him not to start.

Ochowicz says he suspected something was wrong with Hushovd for several months, and tests confirmed he has been struggling with a viral infection for long time , and the health of the rider was the main priority but of course also the fact that Evans need a team with riders who can preforme 100 % for him during the tour. And Hushovd in the former condition would only have been a burden to the team. Which Hushovd agreed on , and now the main targets for the season for the olympics, the world championship and the Vuelta. Hushovd always wanted to do well in the Olympics cause in Norway the olyimpcs got much bigger status than tour de france, so this may help him get a good result there. If it was not for the olympics this would probably have been a much bigger disappointment for him, since he always did well in the tour.

He isn't finishing the Tour though most likely ;)

Green is between Petacchi's who has great form lately, Greipel ( great form as well ) or Sagan.

Hushvod can't add anything in bunch sprints anyway now. Same with Boonen.

As someone said on twitter if Ouchowicz has been concerned about Hushovd health for some months why did BMC force Thor to do the giro, so soon after classics with no respite? Why did BMC not check him then? If Hushovd had prepared like he does for Tdf in all the past years, he would have had time to recover for July.

He appears to have been in a no win situation. If he had done full Giro, to tired for Tour would have been BMC excuse. As he had to drop out of giro, gets dropped for Tour for not being fit enough. I think the BMC/Cadel never had any intention of letting him do the tour, but created the situation to make it Hushovds fault not BMC/Cadel.

I am surprised the Hog has not been on here to say I told you so,and raised the BMC in disarray thread again. I think I might be in agreement with him again.

Agree, think it's a close competition. I can't see Cav being around in the third week nor saw Boonen or Hushovd as contenders with the volume.of sprinters who'll occupy the top 6 on bunch sprints. Sagan, Greipel and Goss will get a stack of points there, Petacchi, Rojas and Hagen plenty too.

Incidentally will Kittel and Degenkolb both go and if so, how well will they do?
