Sad to see him leave and to hear about the situation with his wife. Good decision though, he should be by her side. Hope everything turns out well for them.

Already read last week there were some personal issues. Very sad for him of course, but he'll know he would get a top 10 here, he should have gained some confidence this Vuelta.

Private situation most important obviously, I hope everything will be allright.

wow that's awful for him, but absolutely the right decision. Just hope everything turns out alright for the family.

No wonder he was distracted during the itt.

However, we now know that even in a strong field like this, he can still make a top 10. Sure, it isn't the Tour and most of the contenders have had set-backs, but I think we've seen a better Gesink than the last couple of seasons.

People were making a joke out of him and I think he showed us that he's not done yet. He might not be the "Dutch hope", like people wanted him to be, but he's not crap either.

Gutted for Gesink. Incredible the amount of setbacks he has to deal with in his career.
I hope his wife and child will be allright. I can't imagine the feeling of your wife having surgery while pregnant and it's obviously a big deal as well. Impressive he could perform with that situation in the back of his mind.

Gesink tweeted this on 1 October btw: Happy to have my family home again after a month of insecurity in hospital. Still a long way to go but happy for now. Thanks for supporting!

So it seems like things will be OK with his family.

It really never ends for him, does it? Would love to see him at the front again in a GT, but the chances of that happening seem to become smaller and smaller.

Where some riders have all of the luck in the world. Gesink has none. And that for one of the strongest CQ scoring riders as 20/21 year old ever. Can you imagine the same guy was a certaintity in the top 5/top 10 of stage races in the first 3 years of his career?
