Leipheimer was always a better TTer, and don't forget that it was in 2008. 3 years is a long time.
1) a mountain ITT has little to do with being a good tt--er
2) Contador is a much better ITT-er than Leipheimer.

I have a quiet but unexpectant hope that Carlos Sastre has been sandbagging a bit the last few days (though admittedly he is totally done) and rides with renewed fire in his gut to honour a fallen comrade.

About this, the guys at Sporza were telling that people close to Sastre were saying that he probably will quit after this year and already is not really riding around with that much enjoyment and is pretty much done with the entire thing

Well, let's try to be very accurate!

1. Contador
2-3. Scarponi / Nibali
4. Gadret
5. Menchov

Maybe Alberto doesn't force too much and get a second or third place.
Garzelli is good on those type of TT, but maybe spent very much in the last epic stage (not easy to recover at his age ;))
Rujano isn't bad in those, but I would be very surprised to see him in top 5.

Surely, AC is THE favourite for tomorrow's stage, but I think Nibali's diesel engine will make this one a pretty close battle though.

I just can't fathom why you would be suprised by that.

His only results in Europe after 2005, were in mountain time trials. That would suggest he is very good at them, and is even good at them when the form isn't appearently there.
Now the form is there as well. You would almost expect a top 5 right? He was 6th in the Kronplatz in 2008 when he was nowhere in the other stages.
Why would you be SUPRISED by a top 5? Not saying that he will finish there, but how could it possibly be suprising? I can't understand

1. Yes, but when we talk about a rider who can do both well, then it can be very important.
2. I'm a fan of Contador, but Leipheimer is much better in ITT. That's fact.

Rujano will lose time on the flat parts of the course leading into the climb. Doesn't seem like a guy who would be that strong on a flat part of a tt.

Head-to-Head, Contador and Leipheimer in ITT's:
Now, don't let your head explode

Contador 14 - Leipheimer 11
THAT'S fact

So, can you explain, how is Leipheimer much better of an ITT-er?
He used to be better when Contador was really young. But the last few years Contador has surpassed him even in the time trial department. He has a slightly positive record over Leipheimer in ITT's now...

CQ ranking facts are undeniable :)

In 2008 Leipi was better though, and that's what this is about.

Still not by much, in the flat ITT, Contador was also 2nd to Leipheimer. (quote "Leipheimer is much better" - not true)

And as I said before, that should not matter in a MOUNTAIN time trial. Otherwise time trial expert Joaquim Rodriguez wouldn't have finished top 10 in that same ITT

In the flat TT Contador was also slower than Chavanel and someone else and lost 45-50 seconds to Leipheimer.

Edit: 4th behind Leipheimer. Chavanel and Quinziato and 49 seconds slower than Leipheimer over 42.5 km.

So how's that 'much' worse? 49 seconds on 42km is very little.

1 second aproximatly per km is very little indeed. I picked Igor Anton just to not have a contador pick which gets quite boring :p

I didn't say that it's much worse, however Leipheimer was certainly better in TTs in that period (also including the Olympics).

It was slightly surprising that he was better than Contador on the climb proper (the last 8k) but it could probably be down to Contador usually not being as dominant in the final week of Grand Tours.
