Would they use the whole 37km?
Well, if they're really going up there, I guess they will do it all.
There's no point (imho) in finishing before the top (seeing the steep stuff is in the end, except for those few kms in the middle)

So how is the Giro route will work, since they're starting in Denmark, it will be a long drive from Denmark to Italy (obviously not for the riders, just a few hours by plane), but for all the logistics of the team buses, the mechanics, TV crews etc., bearing in mind that bus and truck drivers can only drive for a certain amount of hours each day (IIRC 12 hours max.). It would be at least a day right to drive from Denmark to Italy).

Dunno. But Denmark is not that much further than Netherland, they should know how to handle it

This one would be like a return to the 80ies, when they had stages like this at the TdF.
That would be a great stage but the Madeleine is a huge risk in May (snow)... plus, I'd rather have the queen stage in Italy than in France (and I'm sure RCS would, too), so that stage is probly too good

Anyway, let's make a recap of what I heard this days:
1. There could be a stage finish in Assisi. Depending on the route, this could be a good hilly stage
2. There's a proposal to make a mountain stage near Genova (someone already wrote that here), with a route similar to the Giro dell'Appennino of this year (actually, a little bit tougher :) ). Imho this could be the stage before Alpe D'Huez (If they approach it via Agnello).
A possible route of the Genoese stage
findorelevation2php.png

As you can see, the only problem would be the final flat section (that is necessary in order to finish in the centre of Genova)
3. There could be a mountain/hilly stage on the Giro di Lombardia roads (I'd love to see the Muro Di Sormano again)
4. The route will pass through many Unesco Sites.

My Italian isn't too good, how reliable are these guys?
as far as I know, that's just a Giro they designed, it's not based on rumours

GIRO 2012.
http://www.tuttobiciweb.it/index.php?page=news&cod=40952&tp=n

Let's all pray the weather is good. It can do whatever it likes the next day or a week or two after that, or even at the start of the race, but not that day, let there be no problems. If there is a God and if He's a cycling fan, He will make sure of this.

That's my rambling nonsensical post done for the day.

I would hate to ride up it. Also bring back the Kronplatz.

EDIT: I hope they get ride of the TTT and the final stage TT, give it a rest for a year or two IMO.

That is an insane climb. A MTF on Kronplatz(Plan de Corones) would be nice, it was scheduled to be a MTF in 06 but they had to shorten the stage due to bad weather.

I agree that I would like to see the TTT removed for a year or two but the the TT on the last day is IMO the proper way to end a GT.

tt on the stelvio? Will probably be awesome like Kronplatz especially if they do it after rest day like last few years but i think its a bit of a waste of the Stelvio.

Nevgal tt was half as steep but the climbers still came out the big winners with Contador Nibali Scarponi Rujano and Garzelli taking the top spots.

You dont need a superGiro catergory mountain (also known as hors hors hors catergory )for a mountain itt.

It will be awesome but id rather see a road stage go up it than a tt.

I would prefer a normal stage finish on Stelvio or the mighty Stelvio+Mortirolo Double. They should do a tt like Sestri Levante - Riomaggiore instead of wasting such a great climb. Italy has enough roads and climbs for something like this.

I am not sure, if this will really happen in 2012. In 2013 Stelvio will have his 60. birthday in the Giro. So it will be there for sure and they won't do it two years in a row.

It looks like another stage will be Cherasco - Alpe d'Huez (Agnello, Izoard, Lautaret), but nothing confirmed yet. Lecco will get a stage and they are also bidding to be the finish of this and next years Giro di Lombardia.

From today's Tuttosport. These are only rumours, so nothing confirmed.

After transfer and rest day the Giro will restart in the Veneto region. There will be fewer transfers between the stages, which was one of the major points why Zomegnan had to go. It also looks like no stage in France, so no Alpe d'Huez. Maybe 2013.

The concept is to create a less cruel, but still very demanding Giro. The southernmost point will be Matese. Maybe with a finish in Campitello. The focus is on classic climbs like maybe Terminillo, Macerone or Abetone. No experiments like Gardecchia and so also nothing like Rifugio Calvanico, the southern Zoncolan.

The race will touch Piemonte, but only with a hilly stage. The decicive stages will be in the last week. Tre Cime, Stelvio (tt), Pordoi and Mortirolo are mentioned and rumoured. Maybe a hilly tt around Sondrio. The last stage in Milano will again be for the sprinters.

Gardecchia stage was actually great.

I'd like to see a 7-hour mountain stage over classic climbs then.

The new race director Vegni has said that they won't do the Rifugio Calvanico next year.

A Mtf on the tre cime is instead very probable, if they do so let's just hope that for once it will be a sunny day so that everybody could enjoy the most beatiful mountains in the world.

The MTT on the Stelvio imho is a waste (from Bormio is the less hard side, plus it would be better as a MTF)
As long as there are at least 5 mountain stage I don't care if they end uphill or downhill (I guess 2-3 MTFs and 2-3 MBF[Mountain Bottom Finish:p] are enough). It's a pity for the Calvanico anyway.

If they finish on Pordoi that will be almost certainly a long mountain stage. Surely Fedaia before the MTF, and before that they will put at least 2-3 dolomites more.

Did any mountain stage end on a downhill this year? Can't remember, but a GT definitely needs downhill finishes.

This year there were no MBFs (maybe only the San Pellegrino Terme stage, but that wasn't a proper MBF)
