It's not only protecting their current position, it's preventing the favourite from strengthening his position. It's completely reasonable. They aren't fans watching for entertainment.

I don't really think it will strengthen Quintana to have Amador in pink. He would have to have a big lead to be more dangerous. Short of that, it could perhaps seed doubt in Movistar, say if Amador gets in pink with 40'' to Tom.

Yeah I actually think Amador getting pink by a few seconds would be a very good scenario for Dumoulin. Sunweb wouldn't have to work to defend pink and maybe Movi might not ride as aggressively when they already have pink.
