A fast start and then a lull before the final 3 mountain stages. A breakaway to take it. I'll go for Rosa.

If any of they contenders have any juice left after today's stage they can blow the race wide open with a long-range attack.

Otherwise, breakaway takes it and we see minimal time gaps.

Lol @ Netserk. This isn't easy by any means, its a very hard transition stage, especially after a queen stage. That might open stage 18 up to see some relevant moves early on hopefully.

I guess 30-40 riders realistically can win such a stage, its impossible to pick a winner really.

Team Sunweb car to hook up a portaloo for the remaining stages, just in case. It will give new meaning to sticky bottle.

Aprica doesn't look like a climb that would trouble riders, but it could catch someone off guard.
Fortunately, or not, there's long way to Tonale and finish.
A breakaway full of Astana riders should take this.

They should ride hard for the first 60km to make it really hard for Dumoulin, don't let him recover after such a hard effort.

That should be the plan but they won't do it. This has Contador trap stage all over it. Many times these stages are raced fast and are much harder than expected. Dumoulin and his team have to be alert.

As many riders as possible in the break. Let the peloton split. Hopefully riders like Landa, Amador and Kruijswijk will try something again.

How steep is the final uphill drag? 3%?

I see a nice bump between 173.7 and 178.9. Can anybody find out something about that? Looks 6%.

The beginning of the stage can catch someone off guard!

But then it is 219 kms. Nobody will try anything in such a long distance. Let's call it a transition stage. :)

It should be pretty obvious that Luis Leon Sanchez will win this stage.

The break should be Sanchez, Costa, Visconti, Fraile, Van Garderen, Izagirre, Konrad, Stuyven, Goncalves, Rolland, Montaguti, Cataldo, Berhane, Conti, Molard, Rosa, Dillier, De Plus, Villella, Teklehaimanot, Polanc and a few random guys.

I wouldn't mind seeing LLS or Rolland win a stage. They have been in a lot of breaks.

If the stage were 40 km shorter it would be a good ambush stage, but ... the breakaway seem to be favourites.

It could be a difficult start for several riders. Break to take it. Would like to see Rosa in the break.

So the most important question is who's gonna take a dump today and how it will affect the race.
Breakaway ftw, LL Sanchez maybe?

It's one of the most interesting stage designs in a while in terms of predicting the winner. I think an all-rounder with decent climbing and some rolling/sprinting skills should take this. Most likely breakaway, because nobody is going to control this unless some of the race favourites are in heavy trouble after the beginning of the stage.

Unless Dumoulin shows unexpected weakness on the first climbs this is obvious for the breakaway. Diego Rosa for me.

Incredible that on an obvious breakaway stage those three would be let go so easily. I don't understand.

I'm really surprised that there aren't dozens of riders trying to get into the breakaway. For many riders today is the last day in which they can do something.
