When Riis did this for Nicky Sorensen in the Tour everyone thought he was a genius. When Cannondale does this tactic they are considdered morons. Even though Cannondale has done some questionable tactics, perhaps that perception has been a bit exagerated. The problem for Cannondale is that on these stages their climbers are simply not good enough to get into the break aways. That should help in the multiclimb-stages. Now they actually succeeded in getting him in there, and if not Quintana wanted to win he would likely win the stage.
It doesn't take a genius to use a tactic, but it takes some smarts to do it right. Today, the break will get caught.

Quintana will attack because tomorrow is the time trial

Nairito's attack anywhere else than 3 last Giro days would be very surprising
Well, normally I would agree, but why is Movistar working so much today if not for Quintana to win?
To restrain other GC contender riders? Dunno

Movi's just responding to the fans' wishes... No breakaway at the bottom of the Blockhaus, only GC action.

Yeah, thats really good news. I hoped they would do that and it sees the break will get caught maybe even before the 'real' climb to Blockhaus, the last 13 km. Maybe Rolland and Fraile will persevere tho. Its frustrating when the camera is more concentrated on the break on a final climb.

Nairo vs Landa vs one of the 10 GC-contender, maybe Zakarin!

Movistar isn't really sacrificing much - just the likes of Sutherland, Bennati and Rojas. Keeps them safely at the front and they have an eye on the team comp as usual

Re: Giro 2017, stage 9: Montenero di Bisaccia - Blockhaus 14

I want to see one of the GC men take off at the foot of the Blockhaus, and not the actual climb, but the uphill pitch leading up to it. As I am looking at the stage profile, there is an initial climb, followed by a short 'downhill' section which leads to the final climb. That may be far from the finish, but I'd love to see one or two guys taking the risk and causing some panic/confusion for the main group. This is exactly what we as fans and the race needs, some much needed excitement!

4% according to teh stage preview. No one who would go is of the caliber to get away from the pace setting of Movistar or Sky

Nibali is trying a new area ratio, 38x30.

This will work about as well as the crank length change last year.

About as good as anything other than good luck works for him. :D ;)

Hence the risk. Also the element of surprise.

I don't think that Quintana will attack unless things get really explosive and there are only couple of riders together with few kilometers to go. But I don't see Quintana losing any time today so if I have to pick one from the main GC bunch I'd still go with Quintana.

EDIT: Am I the only one who doesn't understand Zakarin and Landa hype?
I don't understand the Zaka hype either. I'm guessing it's because people put stock in that Etna attack. I mean, he'll likely be somewhere among the favorites but unless it's raced easy like Etna and he gets a few secs at the end, I don't see him actually dropping the other guys and finishing top 3. Landa, I understand a bit more. We've at least seen him drop the favorites at a GT before, but you never know with him.
