Some quick research shows that Conti would in fact need close to 10 minutes. Let's say he's between the 30th and 40th best climber in the race. Based on previous Zoncolan results, those guys finish at 8-10 minutes. Conti would probably put more effort in than the 40th placed rider from the peloton, but will also be more tired from being in the break.
Last time, Rogers won from the break and lost less than 3 mins I think to Quintana and Uran

Astana on the front?
Lopez is very bad on explosive climbs, so it's best for him if the race is hard from further out so the Zoncolan becomes more of a grind.

If the best GC rider averages 6 W/kg on the climb, Conti with a ten minute head start would need to average about 4.75 W/kg.

Bora should try to bury Viviani in the few next days. Maybe not today but on stage 19 or 20 they have a real chance to drop him on the first mountain and if other GC contenders push the pace chances are good that he will finish outside the time limit.

Chaves dropped already. I really wonder what happened to him.

Michael Rogers climbed Zoncolan around 3 minutes slower than the GC guys in 2014 if I'm not mistaken.

True, although Rogers was vastly superior uphill to any of the guys in this break, and that 2014 ascent was a bit of a GC stalemate, being the penultimate stage. This will be ridden very differently. The break has no chance whatsoever.

Thank god Chaves got his stage win. This is pretty horrible...
He must have some sort of illness. It's impossible to go from good to super bad on such a short notice
