There's a lot of expectation being placed on Dumoulin in here at the moment, I'm not entirely sure it's warranted just yet. The Basso comparisons... way too early for that, and I doubt he'll ever get close to that level as a climber. So far the guys with genuine GT pedigree he's gone up against in his two Giro attempts (Froome, Quintana, Aru) have all turned up in pretty poor form.

You don't need the competition to judge how well Dumoulin goes uphill. Just look at the wattages of last years Giro. They're right up there with the best of them.

Wether Dumoulin does well today does not change that.

It's the most heard argument whenever a rider wins a GT that is unfavorable or somehow unconvincing to people. "The field was weak". Or "The others weren't in good shape clearly".

I used to do the same when Nibali won his first GT. Then later realized how stupid that was. And looking back years later they were all quality fields.

Anyone have the idea that break dynamics have chanced with smaller teams in GTs?
The breaks have indeed been rather disappointing this giro, with the big exception of the Etna break, but I don't think this has anything to do with smaller teams. I think that's rather a coincidence.
