slightly bonkers is right LOL

the question is how many sprinters will remain in the race by friday?

For today - I have picked Scarponi whenever I have thought he's had a chance, just coz I like him so much  but I really think a break will get away today ... and AC isnt likely to allow Scarponi any room to move.

Will be pretty fun to watch if Michele gives it a go though :D

I reckon Petacchi and Ventoso will stick around for a day or so. Both high up in the points classification. They will see what happens on the two stages. See how many points Contador picks up. If a break gets majority of the points on one of the stages, they both may stick around thinking they have a shot still at the points jersey. I highly doubt the points jersey will go to a sprinter but if Petacchi wins again tomorrow, he will have a good lead over Contador and he may stick around until he loses the lead.

I just don't see AC letting the likes of Scarponi or Nibali out of his sights. Smart thing to do would be to let a break form with someone low enough on GC that Lampre and Liquigas don't object and then let the gap grow until one or more of the break members is threatening their (Scarponi's or Nibali's) position on GC and force those teams to chase.

Scarponi is the only guy who could get away on these terrains but if Saxo let a group go away and then set a false tempo, it won't be descisive enough for Scarponi to make a move and get away and AC would also have plenty of team mates to chase if he gets away.

Wonder if Richie Porte would be allowed to get in the break - especially if saxo want to gift the pink to someone ?

Doubt it, he'll probably be riding for AC. Saxo will have a lot of work to do over the next 1.5 weeks so no need for unnecessary breakaways.

No way. All of his energies will be needed over the next 10 stages. EDIT: Actually, that might not be a bad strategy. And it certainly would be unexpected. It would take ALL responsibility off of Saxo to chase down the break and allow AC just to follow wheels (and the rest of the Saxo climbers to sit back). And the course is relatively short (144 KM) that it won't put excessive damage on Richie.

It has some possibilities...

Any action that translates into Saxo not doing any work = not allow by peloton

I think it would be Saxo's wet dream. I think that the peloton would chase down any Saxo rider like a dog however.

True, but the break has to form and Porte may be more acceptable than someone who is a true threat to GC getting into the break. Plus, it would allow teams that are more interested in the overall win rather than GC to have a shot at the stage.

But yeah, I see your point.

This Giro is dull. It's turning into a a Contador parade lap.
But I will keep watching and go for Tschopp tonight.

Slightly bonkers prediction: Alessandro Petacchi to get in the (large) break, to attempt to win the TV sprint, in the hope of getting a win on Thursday and trying to build up a lead in the race for red.

He's in the attack. Nice prediction. Not sure whether it's the right break though.
