Looking at this startlist it's a little confusing how nine years ago, we had a podium in this race consisting of Jan Bakelants, Andrea Fedi and Ángel Madrazo...

Yeah, but if you look at all the podiums of the 20-30 years, it’s a very accomplished group of mostly GC-type climbers overall, moreso than we get in some monuments. Really impressive for this sized race.

Roglic himself is better than in 2020/2021 in absolute terms. In relative terms, he hasn't aged lost that much and it's essentially just that Pogacar and Vingegaard passed him by.

I disagree. Maybe he is not a worse climber in high mountains, but he was so much more explosive back then. He was by far the best sprinter/puncher in any group of climbers he was in, if we don't count Pogačar. And I believe he was more explosive than Pogačar if the race wasn't hard and long enough. Now he gets occasionally beaten in a sprint by the Gaudus and Vlasovs of this world and barely outpunches Mas on a final suited to him. There was no way todays Remco outsprints (flat ot uphill) 2020 Rogla, now I give them probably 50/50 chances.

So for a hilly course like Emilia, prime Rogla was in 2020/2021 and IMO even the super saiyan Pogi of today doesn't easily beat him.

Now that doesn't mean much for tomorrow. Pogi is a huge favourite, we all know that.

He really should. This race makes no difference whatsoever to him, his team has done everything he's asked this year (except Ayuso).

Most of them, except one rider, has no problem working for Pog. They know he is much better than them.

But it is not the important race. However, he hasnt won this one so he might want it. He has won Tre Valli Varesine.

Lombardia is obviously the most important one.

Last year Rogla still had a strong stomp here. We will see this year, he used it very rarely this season and maybe declined indeed.

As a Pogacar fan I thought the same, it was really beautiful because no one was expecting Roglic to drop Pogacar. After this duel, some of us started to think Roglic might win Lombardia but then Pogacar destroyed the field.

First race for Pogačar in the rainbow jersey, hope for a win but Roglič shouldn't be underestimated here so Pogačar should attack before the last lap to avoid going into an uphill sprint with his countryman.

I will keep an eye on Mas, he is in good shape and already won this race in 2022.

I must also just say that the idea that Pogacar couldn't win a sprint vs Roglic is funny as hell too. Like he's just never hit a good level at this race.

In the past they both managed to beat each other in such uphill finishes. An in-form Pogacar has a ridiculous uphill finish i.e. see Grand Colombiere stage finish at the Tour 2023. I'm not sure if Rogla is as strong in explosivity this year as he was in the past, we will see (or maybe we won't if Pogacar attacks earlier).

There are many reasons to believe in a Pogacar victory: his level has never been higher than this year, and he’s in better shape at this point in the season than he usually is; he has never won the race before, and he will undoubtedly be extra motivated to claim his first victory in the rainbow stripes. Furthermore, his biggest rival, Roglic, may not be quite as strong as he usually is—it seems he has lost just a bit of his sharpness in the finishes—and it’s hard to see anyone else beating him in a race that almost always gets decided on the final ascent up the San Luca climb.
