Giro d'Italia 2018 stage 5: Agrigento – Santa Ninfa 153 km

Page 3 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
Today's second half of the route seems hillier than yesterday with a less-explosive finish, bar the kick around 2km. It could favour Pinot. Konrad is really impressive, he keeps improving on various terrains with interesting top10s.

But Wellens is still a big favorite for today provided that he launches his attack on the incline. For the last hundreds of meters, which are easier, it's gonna be harder for him than yesterday I guess.

I'm wondering how much time are gonna ship Froome, Aru and MAL again. Some post-races insights showed that MAL and Froome could've been caught in/slowed by the crash within the last 5kms. MAL is especially in trouble, I hope he will get his acts together. Otherwise, he can even forget the top 5.

Anyone know why Pedersen and Eg lost 16 minutes?

Unless they were in a crash, I see that as a sign Trek is already now gearing up, for breakaways and stage wins..... rather than thinking Brambi can hack it in the GC.

According to Cyclingnews' ticker Mads P spent a lot of energy trying to keep Brambilla close to the peloton after his mechanical.

And for the record both agendas (Brambillas GC and Treks stage ambitions) are pleased with them losing time yesterday. Most likely Eg is preserving energy to be able to help Brambilla a bit on Etna.

We also don't know how long Eg had to wait for a new wheel.

Yesterday positioning was key and if you were in the wrong position at the bottom of the climb you were not coming back
Also gaps of 20 seconds to leader was cos of the first split as second split imo was very touch and go

If I were BMC today I'd put a man in the break and let Lotto and UAE and MScott chase

These gaps will be nothing come the last week
It is good Dumoulin has the time now though

Didn't watch yesterday, so had no idea :)

Another nice stage. Don't see this one being decided on the line, so I'm going Kreuziger with an attack within 10k. Would not hurt MS to have him as high as possible in the GC.

Expect Kreuziger to have crack in stage 6 up MT Etna - team keen to grab the pink jersey.

I watched. However, it happened just as they showed an interview, so it was shown in a smaller split screen. All I saw was Eg pushing Brambilla back into the race. Then - oddly enough - media didn't focus on the neo-pro.

Completely agreed, positioning in those kind of finishes is really important. Sky literally vanished in the last 5kms and Astana played some weird tactics for Lulu apparently. Yeah those are still minor gaps but add 20 or 30sec each day and you can have a significant margin by the second week. Froome, Chaves and MAL are already 1min behind Dumoulin.

The most worrying part is if Dumoulin keeps or even grow his advantage in the following days. And I'm pretty sure he will with all those mono-MTF coming. Knowing that he is going to smash everyone on the next ITT by 1min at least, it's frightening. I'm defo waiting for Delle Finestre stage and the very last week to see real fireworks.

Cycling Podcast reporting that after the stage Froome had a go at Ellisonde re positioning
Seems he was rattled about losing the time and was animated when talking to Kenny

Find it a bit rich that he is having a go at littlle Kenny and Poels is ahead ?

I know Henao had a puncture late on but where the hell is de la Cruz...is he being saved for the final week

Seems to me Poles is SKYs back up

The coverage was not perfect but:
At 1,1 km to finish they both (Poels and CS) were at ca 15th position with the 4-5 sec gap.
At 800 m to go (just after right, narrow corner) Poels was 7th with 3 sec to leaders.
CF? - as was said, probably was "hold up" in this corner. Bad positioning or sth like that.
At the time 5:16:17 (~600 m to go) Poels was 5th, but looked back, there was no CF, and Poels slowed down.
Was 23th as the last one with 10 sec gap.

Italian television are saying the start of this stage as been delayed by 10 minutes due to an accident out on the route.

Quite a terrible accident actually. A car reportedly forced the road closure and crashed into a moto of the organization. First reports said the driver was killed, but updated one say he is in live threatening conditions...
