4/10 for me. Probably the worst route of the Vegni era, tied with 2014 and possibly 2018.

While I 100% support forgetting the events of the 2018 Giro, the route wasn't near this bad? It was just backloaded? Although I do remember people complaining about Finestre being wasted, me not included.

Think that way more about 2017. This one however is outright terrible to me.

Yeah I meant that descent. Not that I think all that much is lost on not climbing Gavia from Bormio. Tbh plenty of descents have large drops, no? Is it that much worse than say the Aubisque

You could have an easier MTF on the Tonale afterwards and the 2012 side of the Mortirolo before the Gavia, that wouldn't be half bad, TBH.

Last year and in 2010 we had the sterrato stage to compensate for the lack of kms of ITT (in 2010 the weather and the L' Aquila stage also did wonders), but this route gives me 2012 Giro vibes, with easier mountain stages, but better hilly stages.

Honestly, this one feels worse, 2014 or 2012 Giro with better hilly stages (the 2012 Giro had clearly harder high mountain stages).

Usually it's easy even for me to find some positives in a route, now I feel relgated to "this side of Etna looks slightly better"

Btw, could anyone try guess which climbs are not very probable anye more due to road condition? Fauniera and Sampeyre have been mentioned. Descending Gavia south? One of the sides of Vivione? What about roads like Passo San Marco, Passo Pennes, the parallell routes to Costalunga (Nigra, Obergummer) or other tough climbs in the Alps or Dolomites that are rarely used?

I know that Passo Pennes (Penserjoch), Passo Giovo (Jaufenpass) and Passo Nigra (Nigerpass) are in a very good condition. The upper part of the Passo di Costalunga (Karerpass) was in avery bad condition two years ago, don't know if it was renewed (very likely because it's a tourist hotspot).

Hehe, what is the point of all with having a so short ITT? This would have been a good prologue. A ITT towards the end of the second week or as the first stage in the third week should be at least 35-40 km or more. This is just meaningless.

I know that Passo Pennes (Penserjoch), Passo Giovo (Jaufenpass) and Passo Nigra (Nigerpass) are in a very good condition. The upper part of the Passo di Costalunga (Karerpass) was in avery bad condition two years ago, don't know if it was renewed (very likely because it's a tourist hotspot).

Pennes also got repaved this summer and is in great condition., the main problem in the Western part of Südtirol is the lack of Ski station/towns willing to pay for stages, the roads are fine.

Really like it. A GT where TT skills are relatively unimportant makes sense to me once in a while. I like the Etna & Blockhaus stages to make it clear early on which favourites will not be real contenders. Then the final week starts of amazingly with the Torino stage, which for me just has an amazing profile.

After that every stage with the exception of stage 18 can become a vital stage in this Giro and there will be plenty of action. A lot of movement will be possible in the general classification. Very good route!

2. You don't put any ITTs that actually suit him in the Giro and really reduce the amount of kms of ITT.

Thanks. I thought Costalunga was the most travelled road in that part, and that road therefore would be in good condition......

So in reality there aren't many climbs except the (in)famous Fauniera and Sampeyre that is of the table today. And perhaps Gavia south, but that isn't really much of a loss.

Podium might be a bit too much for Ciccone, maybe a top 5.
Witth this route even Fortunato might aim for a top 10 in addition to stage wins.
Ciccone actually worked a decent amount on his TT during the summer, in the Vuelta opening TT he was one the same level as Bernal and Valverde. Not great, but no longer really bad.

I think it's maybe a ploy to get the non Slovenians to the Giro

All in all this is a pretty mediocre route, or at least not fulfilling the potential it has with those climbs and stage finishes used. With the good medium mountain stages and a double ascent of Passo Lanciano/Majelletta, I rate it 7 of 10. It could have been a 9 with some rather small changes.

Have we heard anything about Ganna's plans in the coming years? Continue to be a time trial specialist and do some stage hunting? Or will he try something else? I actually hope he doesn't plan to become a GT rider......
