You attack when you are strong, regardless of the stage (not being sprint stage of course). Because you never know when you will be weak. Especially if you are planning to make an assault in a hard stage when you don't have it. Lanterne Rouge invoking the Tour 2020 again for waiting too long:

That was Froome, Armstrong, Contador formula.
Agree, but there are not Armstrong, Froome, or Contador.

On a side note, it's almost like they only prepared for Remco and now they don't really know what to do. With these gaps, it's all too easy to keep it that way, maybe snag a few seconds along the way, until the ITT. There's no "one minute to make up". That's my fear.

I really don't think that

Stage 16...things happen...and teams have to start pushing each other and see who's real. I can't imagine the break making it to the end. Monte Bondone is tough but the finish is flat-ish and that's not the typical Roglic cardio kilometer. If Thomas struggled, Arensman and De Plus probably brought him back. Someone in the leading group must take a shot or it's stage 20 of the '17 Giro all over again, small group finish and Thibaut Pinot wins this bike race.

Hard to say as without some serious bunch reduction there likely won't be serious attacks. From the top guys. So would a team like JV try to blow the race up tomorrow. They i guess could if they wanted to. But are there even better stages for that? Likely. So if not JV then somebody else must do the reduction tomorrow. Or there won't be much GC action.

Ineos won’t do that, and that can always be applied to the best domestique of a leader

“They are cards we still have in our hand and we will certainly look at any way we can use them to our advantage. Thymen and Laurens ride very well this Giro. Of course Roglič and Almeida are also very strong. But I think the best placed riders among them are Brandon McNulty (Diego Ulissi and Davide Formolo are still ahead of him, ed.) and Sepp Kuss. Tactically, they therefore have less options than we do. So yes, we should definitely start using Arensman and De Pluski.”

Very strange stage will be tomorrow. This is one of those days in which anything can happen. On paper Roglic is the leader and has a strong team around him and dedicated to him. On the other hand INEOS can play their cards and send De Plus or Arensman on the attack. But in the process Thomas can lose the Giro, but INEOS can win everything. I mean, they have 3 riders in the top ten. They can sacrifice 2 riders if they truly want to win this thing.

Now everyone will try to go in the breakaway tomorrow. I mean everyone. The probability of having some riders close in GC are relatively high. I can count at least 5. It will be hard to control. that's why I thought it was probably better for INEOS to send someone close to avoid controlling the race. But it is not in their DNA.

We'll see what happens.

If the stage goes like we’re hoping one of the top three will crack. I think it’s going to be Roglic but could be any. Or the stage is a drag for those positions.

Based on the little action we have seen I just don´t think that Ineos having a numerical advantage matters. Unless Arensman finds his 3rd week legs from last years Vuelta he is simply one or two levels below Roglic and Thomas in the mountains. Same for De Plus.

I can not see any reason why Ineos or Jumbo would attack today. It'll be a typical Ineos tempo on the front to drop guys in trouble. If it's going to be hot then it's even more likely to be a grinding away tactic.

This is one of the best moment in cycling in the last 10 years.

Actually FOLIFOROV competed only twice on the 22nd of May in his entire career and won on both occasions. He is actually unbeaten on the 22nd of May, and so some groups of cycling fans celebrate this day as a special foliforov day paying tribute to the legend.

That's actually my birthday. My parties always go off. Now I know the reason why.

They would just be working for Roglic in that case. Burning up their 2 guys in the top ten (who else would be setting the pace?) while rolling out the red carpet for Roglic. If they do this then they are really idiots.

So far we've had:

2 TTs
5 bunch sprints
8 breakaways wins

I went back 30 years and couldn't find a Giro d'Italia with zero non TT stage wins by GC riders entering the third week.
Some would argue that there has been 0 GC riders so far smh.

Crazy stat if it holds like that through the whole Giro and Thomas, Roglic, Almeida, or Caruso win the MTT.

Chris Horner, in his Giro rest day video, speculated that Jumbo may have been conservative the first two weeks because half their team was called up without having trained specifically for the Giro and maybe the team wanted to give them a better chance to come into form. But he also said that if Roglic doesn't attack on stage 16, he might well have something wrong physically.

So basically… he said nothing?

As if they are good to use De Plus… I don’t think they have any confidence in him bringing the jersey home.
