I don't think it was an attack, I honestly think he just wanted to ride up in a tempo that suited him best, and well that just blew everyone else away. It's ridiculous to say this, but I think it would be harder for him to just totally chill.
I think he just rode a casual tempo for him and everyone dropped. Not sure he even attacked
