Can't decide if Tonale after Mortirolo is better or worse than Aprica.
If you're lucky, you'll get Bormio 2000 after Mortirolo from your favourite side next year.

It'd be the third time in a row from that side, and we haven't had the classic Aprica finish since 2015. Since the Mazzo side was last used in 2019, the U23 Giro has made use of the shallow side that goes directly from the pass to Aprica and also introduced Guspessa, but none of the new options have been used in the Giro since 2012.

the main road hasnt even been done since the downhill finish abomination in 2008

for some reason, RCS has wanted to add steepness to aprica by taking a parallel road, instead of just doing the shallow power climb, letting the gaps balloon.

According to LFR, this means among the following stages:

Stage 7: The MTF to Marsia shown in the post above.
Stage 9: Strade Bianche stage to Siena
Stage 10: ITT
Stage 15: The Asiago stage with Grappa
Stage 17: Bormio stage from Riva del Garda (does this mean Gavia and no Stelvio since a Bormio finish with Stelvio and start in Riva would be very long?)
Stage 19: Ayas (Champoluc) in Aosta. Does this mean Zuccore and Col de Joux first?
Stage 20: Sestriere via Finestre

Finestre is of course great. An both stage 17 and 19 could be very well designed stages. The negative aspect is that it's yet again backloaded. But still this could be one of the best designed GT routes in the 2020s.

Edit: A stage from Biella to Champoluc needs something more than go directly up the valley, and then Zuccore and Joux before the last gentle gradient to Champouc. Otherwise it would be very short ~100 km. Adding Saint-Panthaleon would perhaps be the obvious option. Although that would perhaps less probable that they use Zuccore?

It is very backloaded, yes. Especially since some rumours say that stage 16 should also be a mountain stage (I have no details yet). My guess is that the Bormio stage will be somewhat easy. Something like Carlo Magno - Tonale - sad Mortirolo - false flat to Bormio. I wouldn't mind this as long as the previous stage is good.

Backloading aside, I'm very happy that there are basically no MTFs in this route. I hope it stays that way.

Haha, that would be utterly ridiculous! For fcuks sake!

A stage to Torbole could easily be a medium mountain stage suited for breakways. Then they could the Bormio stage a more proper high mountain stage. Some of the design choices RCS (if this is true) make in the later years are just stupid!

2005: off the back of bad routes in 2002 and 2004, RCS get themselves sorted out and produce a great route
2015: off the back of bad routes in 2013 and 2014, RCS get themselves sorted out and produce a great route
2025: off the back of bad routes in 2022, 2023 and 2024, RCS are seemingly getting themselves sorted out and producing a great route

I see a pattern...

Next year is the 200 year anniversary of the construction of the Stelvio route, so at least plan a for the Bormio stage should include the Stelvio. With the Giro starting one week later than the last few years I'd take the risk.

We all would certainly take that risk, yes. But pretty much all rumours I've heard said no Stelvio nor Gavia. It seems Vegni wants a low altitude Giro for once.

Gavia could still be done if they wanted to.

Good weather: Riva - (Daone) - Carlo Magno - Tonale - Gavia - Bormio 2000
Back in case of bad weather: Riva - (Daone) - Carlo Magno - Tonale - Mortirolo - Bormio 2000.
