I think had it not been for that Sunday stage, Crostis stays in. Perhaps that mountain block was a little too hard looking back at it. Putting in a Finestre level climb before Zoncolon followed by the 7 hour death march... I can see why the peloton revolted

The descent was already made safe with crash barriers. Would have been the safest in the race.
Lol, did you see the descent even with crash barriers?

Yes I agree, plus the understandable concern after wouter weylandt's death. It was literally two of the hardest stages in recent grand history back to back.
Unfortunately I just can't see the Crostis decent being used, the only way possible would be to do either a MTF or MTT. Adam Hansen would have a field day with that decent, and even Zomegnan caved in. I can't see Vegni doing it.

For all that's wrong with Tour routes, at least they don't often fall into the MTF for the sake of having an MTF trap that the Giro and especially the Vuelta seem to love. To put one in the third week is especially bad.

Ayas is fine if you put enough hard climbs on the way (Tzecore is key), but if it's stage 19 I'm worried that they'll put a much harder route in stage 20 once again...

Anything less than this on the way to Ayaz would be disappointing.

All in all the news are promising.
Crostis should be on the cards (still don't believe it tho) for 2026, not next year

2023 had some really tough 4000+ metre mountain stages, but had horrible placement with the MTT, which killed the queen stage.

Ooh, no I meant the Tour 2023, I didn't mean the Giro.
That Giro really had tough mountain stages but all of them were about the MTF. Add to that the horrible placement and ITTs basically not bringing any gaps between top contenders and you get the worst race in the history.

Tre Cime is overrated IMO, we had one good stage in 2007 where it broke up on the Giau. But in 2013 (even without climbs being canceled the race was already over) and 2023 nothing happend until the last few km. Would much prefer a finish in Cortina.
3 Zinnen + Tre Croci probably would be ideal for a MTT. Lots of pitoresque shots of the riders in the Dolomites and a demanding course for a race against the clock.

As a MTF you're obviously correct. The stunning views doesn't justify the lame storyline a stage towards the the 3 Merlons provides.

On a side note, next year it'll be 10 YEARS since the last classic Mortirolo/ Aprica finish (I know technically 2019 was similar and the original proposed stage over the Gavia was awesome, and 2022 was BS)
It's the best combo in cycling IMO, and its about time we get a proper Mortirolo stage.

If you've ridden it, you wouldn't say that. The hardest 4 km I've ever ridden, in part because of the steep, long 17% ramps, in part because it was after the other passes (Giau is also a beast). On a side note, the scenery over all these passes is absolutely stunning.

That‘s exactly the problem, having the hardest 4 km at the end of a stage isn‘t great if you want long-range attacks. It‘s not great route design.

Yeah, Tre Cime after Giau is brutal. That said, as a solo climb Tre Cime from Auronzo is something that you shouldn't underestimate.

I'd have a stage with Passo Collalunga, Passo Fedaia, Passo Tre Croce and Tre Cime di Laverido.
I guess it will rather be Col Druscie. It could be preceeded by (depending on stage start) Piancavallo, Forcella Staulanza and Giau, where the latter is the far most important. If they start a bit closer to the finish than Udine it would be possible with more climbs. This so

Agreed, but if we have Finestere-Sestriere that is about equally good.

I meant overrated in terms it being a queen stage, wasn't questioning it's difficulty. As Queen Stagiaire said, the last 4km being so hard is the problem as it discourages long range attacks. Similar to the Marmolarda, as a MTF it sucks, but as a penultimate climb it's awesome.
As Red Rick said, it would work well at the start of a block of mountain stages.
I haven't ridden Tre Cime, but as it happens I was in the Dolomites last month and I agree with you, the scenery is incredible and it's the best place I've ever ridden a bike.

Couldn't they start in pordenone or Sacile and do something similar to 2021?

I too was there last month. If you look at the overall aspect, the scenery is just tops. I think, however, with a Pogacar or a Remco in the race the route, finishing atop Tre Cime di Lavaredo, would produce fireworks.
