Contador was second here the year he won the Giro. Nibali won this stage.

It seems that the balance of power is usually visible at this stage. It's striking that only Del Toro was ahead of these two riders.

The GC riders don't seem to be strong. We've seen good intentions from Bernal and a intelligent attack from Carapaz, and Del Toro, who seems strong so far. But they are more intentions than force.

They can't or are saving energy despite the Giro's course is weak.

We know if Ayuso wins this Giro he is going to daddy Matxin to demand to co-lead with Pogacar in TdF 2026 despite Pogacar being levels above him. Will be a Lance/Contador moment.
That would be living far from reality.

Hindley has won the Giro and he couldn't possibly ask Pogacar for co-leadership.

The DS aren't stupid; winning the Giro doesn't mean being at the level of the Tour de France winner, or even at the level of the second at TDF.

And Ayuso, no matter how much he talks, is aware that this is a different level. He knows that Pogacar would have fought for victory today and would have caught Van Aert and Del Toro on Sunday.

Carapaz and Pidcock both looked completely cooked 300 m from the line. Kind of weak performance.
This type of finish is very peculiar and specific, especially if it's full gas from the bottom and the actual sprint is on a steep gradient too. It becomes this weird 1 minute interval where you completely explode if it's too long. Similar to Rodez in the Tour, which has had shockingly big gaps for being essentially a 1 minute climb.

Roglic actually looked really strong and effortless on the final stretch. Other GC contenders not so much and they had to empty their tanks.
Well he's much better naturally at this sort of effort than nearly every GC contender. If he's healthy and hasn't trained all his medium fast twitch fibers into the ground I'd always expect him to be at least s.t. with Pedersen, if not winning outright.

Yes, but tbf alot of other GC riders also underperformed compared to expectations, like Ayuso, Ciccone and S. Yates. Maybe the arrive was not so hard as to favour them over puncheur, but others like Tiberi overperformed.
The last time the Giro was here, an old Gilbert long past his best puncheur days deleted all the GC riders in slow, heavy conditions.

Why people favored GC riders without any sprinting cred is beyond me.

Roglic aint winning this Giro. Looks super mediocre outside of the time trials, and that part is over
He's not sprinting, but he seems comfortable and moving around easily on the climbs. Not sure I'm seeing the same thing. There's really no one here who is good enough in the mountains to clearly be superior.

I think fair to question if he can drag enough time back, but hard to imagine he's not going to attack and drop pretty much everyone on some of the big climbs. I think he's saving his powder.

What has Hindley got to do with UAE, Ayuso and Pogacar? :tearsofjoy:

Let me put you on some game that you didn't know. Ayuso is Matxin's special boy, he has been promised plenty of things from Matxin and if Ayuso wins Giro, he will 100% demand to co-lead TdF 2026 that will take off from his hometown of Barcelona. Now don't get ahead of yourself, I only said that he will demand to co-lead.

Ayuso, Ciccone, Pidcock and Carapaz are all quite punchy, so I think it was justified to expect a decent result of them. Definitively not a pure climber finish, but it's still peculiar that all of them finished behind Tiberi and Bernal that are not really explosive.
