How popular is cycling in Mexico? I would think less than Colombia/Ecuador etc.?
Not popular,
@135 million people, explosive economy with ever improving quality of life for all, @ school system has expanded by 1000+% in @25-30 years!! 35% of population is in what is called " informal economy " which means working for cash don't pay income taxes.
Middle and upper class have doubled in @20 years!! Still consumable income doesn't allow millions to buy a @$3000 dollar bike and associated accessories for racing,
riding on the other hand, popular for sure.
A note about traditional bicycle racing folklore about lots of rough around edges, hardman characters in the sport..in Mexico still tens of millions of people on Mexican work week which is 8-10 hours Monday thru Friday and either same or couple hours less on Saturday..
Not uncommon to see Mexicans riding road and mountain bikes ( yes off road!) At night using lights!! Something about a bike racer or want to bike racer finding time to train after working 10 hours!! It's a thing..
In big cities vibrant cycling scene including racing..Tijuana has 2.3 million people and it's attached to San Diego with a million less but big cycling scene.. Racing in Southern California is accessible to people who live in Northern Baja, where Del Toro is from, Mexico City is 23 million population, great bike racers of all kinds, Monterrey , Has 6 million people in Monterrey proper and surrounding areas, good riding and riders, is a very very affluent city..
The Del Toro story will come out little by little, but guy has been good on a bike ( road, mountain, cyclocross, gravel) since he could ride one. And to make all this make sense he has had excellent cycling advice since he was a young boy..
