Ayuso, Ciccone, Pidcock and Carapaz are all quite punchy, so I think it was justified to expect a decent result of them. Definitively not a pure climber finish, but it's still peculiar that all of them finished behind Tiberi and Bernal that are not really explosive.
On a climb this short positioning matters a lot so I'd kind of ignore any positioning difference that's in the s.t.

Similarly, Del Toro getting 3s is also largely due to positioning compared to some other riders, because he exploded at the end too.

What has Hindley got to do with UAE, Ayuso and Pogacar? :tearsofjoy:

Let me put you on some game that you didn't know. Ayuso is Matxin's special boy, he has been promised plenty of things from Matxin and if Ayuso wins Giro, he will 100% demand to co-lead TdF 2026 that will take off from his hometown of Barcelona. Now don't get ahead of yourself, I only said that he will demand to co-lead.
It was an example that Hindley, even though he won a Giro, isn't on the same level as Pogacar.
Everything needs to be explained.

Ayuso knows that winning the Giro doesn't elevate him to the same level.

I agree, there are definitely other factors, but for example Ayuso and del Toro were similarly positioned and the difference between them was quite evident. On the other hand Roglic looked at least decent, and he may have hang with del Toro if he was better placed. Unfortunately he does not really have someone who can help him in this regard
By the way how is our mythical creature Michael Storer doing? He is just buying his time before liftoff on Valentino?
He looked suspect on San Pellegrino IIRC

Del Toro positioned himself on his own when the rest of the GC guys weren't able to do it with at least 1-2 helpers. With 2km to go he was isolated and not even among the top 20. When the climb starts he is on Pedersen's wheel. Probably wasted a lot of energy to get back into position.

Yes, Im down for a best GC placement out of Del Toro and Roglic. 1 month
Great! Deal.

You will wear the postman delivering the mail:

Nice stage with a great battle at the end between the two super versatile sprinters Pedersen and Van Aert. UAE leaders taking advantage of the bonus seconds with Del Toro looking the strongest GC rider once again.

Roglic is gonna be our Froome from 2018.
Del Toro is gonna be our Yates.

So is Ayuso going to be our Dumoulin?

Who even was the best placed Alpecin rider in the race?
The streets won't forget this memorable 38th from big Kaden Groves (their best finisher apparently).
:D
Yeah, what the heck was that?

It's one thing if you try to go for it but then at the sprint your guy only gets 2-3° instead of 1st.
Let's say he does even do 7°:
s... happens.
But 38°-39°-75°... c'mon:
that's embarassing.
Who the heck were Alpecin even pulling for?

RAI assumed it was for Hermans, 'cause they thought today's finish was way to hard for Groves.
Well, the latter finished 75° and the former 38°

Tiberi can't be Dumoulin; Dumoulin was seen
You know Tiberi is in the race because they post the classification at the end of each stage

Tiberi is definitely winning...the prize as the best impression ever of Haimar Zubeldia.

A pretty impressive feat.

How popular is cycling in Mexico? I would think less than Colombia/Ecuador etc.?
Not popular,
@135 million people, explosive economy with ever improving quality of life for all, @ school system has expanded by 1000+% in @25-30 years!! 35% of population is in what is called " informal economy " which means working for cash don't pay income taxes.
Middle and upper class have doubled in @20 years!! Still consumable income doesn't allow millions to buy a @$3000 dollar bike and associated accessories for racing,
riding on the other hand, popular for sure.
A note about traditional bicycle racing folklore about lots of rough around edges, hardman characters in the sport..in Mexico still tens of millions of people on Mexican work week which is 8-10 hours Monday thru Friday and either same or couple hours less on Saturday..
Not uncommon to see Mexicans riding road and mountain bikes ( yes off road!) At night using lights!! Something about a bike racer or want to bike racer finding time to train after working 10 hours!! It's a thing..
In big cities vibrant cycling scene including racing..Tijuana has 2.3 million people and it's attached to San Diego with a million less but big cycling scene.. Racing in Southern California is accessible to people who live in Northern Baja, where Del Toro is from, Mexico City is 23 million population, great bike racers of all kinds, Monterrey , Has 6 million people in Monterrey proper and surrounding areas, good riding and riders, is a very very affluent city..
The Del Toro story will come out little by little, but guy has been good on a bike ( road, mountain, cyclocross, gravel) since he could ride one. And to make all this make sense he has had excellent cycling advice since he was a young boy..

Pidcock was in bad position (but probably already due to bad legs), Ciccone not that great but in the wheel of Roglic and Carapaz & Ayuse were actually in good position. I think it's fair to say they didn't look to good today. Carapaz lost a lot of spots, Ayuso some and Ciccone too.

Gee actually completely out of position and made up a lot.
