Giving up 2nd to have a chance for 1st makes sense, that's the difference. Especially when you have been on the podium in all GTs already and have won the giro before. Del Toro strategy was to gamble on the fact Carapaz would chase Yates to protect on his second place, Carapaz took the bait a few time but then called the bluff.
