Kind of disappointed with the time loss of Anton, seems he still cannot handle two days like this in a row. Still, it is sort of the return of the climber that can beat anyone on one day and then loses al GC hopes in the next one. We didn't have them around for some time.

He went deep into red yesterday to take the win... I was expecting this today...

He still could react to Contador quite easily when Contador attacked on top of the Cima Coppi. After that, it just seemed over, but then he didn't totally bonk either.

LOL? He bonked BIG TIME... finished at almost 8min today...

Nieve has only two victories as a professional: the queen stage of the Vuelta 10 and the queen stage of the Giro 11.

Veo7 commentator said today: "Pantani won the last time trial on a Tour, can't remember the year"

Of course he can't remember, it never happened. He did a good time trial in 1998, that's all.

VEO7 is an awfull chaine to see cycling, go to eitb if you are able to get the basque :D

BTW, epic stage today, one of the hardest ever, some riders more than 8 hours... never seen

Now, Anton and Nieve to stay calm, they will ride solid Nevegal TT then to the attack in Finestre... that stage is 12 km longer than today... eveything can happen in Finestre+sterrato+sestriere+240 km

He dropped already in the false flat section before the penultimate climb really started. Losing a little over six minutes to the best guy in that group is not what I call totally bonk. Looking forward to his explanation.

Contador wasn't taking it easy yesterday, but he was obviously afraid of the tiffosi. One of them even tried to hit him on Zoncolan. His racing style was weird on the Zoncolan, hard to deny that one. Can be explained by the angry tifosi though. Totally classless these Italian fans the last 2 days.
They are just frustrated Nibbles is nowhere near Contador.

Just wanted to ask again --
when's the last time we had a major grand tour stage where 1 through 15 were all on different teams?

He already said before the giro that he wasn't there for the GC and that he and his DS would expect some harder loses at some days. For this as a goal he's actually done quite well so far. And he still might get a very decent GC spot. That is not his prime form, atleast that' is what was comunicated.

How technical is the Finestre descent? And is it long enough for Nibbles to perhaps get a decent headstart on Scarponi?

Unfortunately for Nibbles Finnestre descent is only about 1/2 of the climb, and far less steep.

So Scarponi has plenty and plenty of climbing to get a gap and Squalo only has 1/2 the distance and 1/3 of the altitude drop to get that back.

well to be fair it isn't even clear that scarponi will be able to drop nibali. both have had bad days in the past 2 weeks.

this was a very gutsy ride by nibali. he really knows how to suffer on a bike. and i am glad that he at least tried one way or the other do something to gain time on contador, even knowing those attacks would be pointless.

do you guys think he can gain time on the 2 stages this week that end with some downhill in them?

Wasnt Bola the queen stage, even if it wasnt raced that way?

Let's not forget that without the painful time loss in Orvieto due to bad luck, Rujano would now have been 2nd at 3'30 from Contador.;)

Yeah, Contador already leading the maglia rossa with 46 points :D

Hope he wins the maglia verde back as well.

Nieve bumped him back to third place in the KOM. I guess a lot will depend on breaks.

I was actually trying to page back to your remarks about tifosi, which someone quoted. I read that Contador accepted a ride to the hotel in a helicopter after Saurday's stage. I wonder if the race was worried about him trying to ride his bike back down the mountain past the fans to the team bus? (Riis rode down on the back of a moto)

Wouldnt count on it.

stage 17- The Passo Tonale will probably be raced weakly, Apica is a false flat so there wont be much of a selection going into the descent.

The descent is good but there is 8.2k of pan flat after it so Nibali would have to get some gap on the descent to even hold on.

Stage 18 - Passo di Ganda is harder but not much and 30k out, then theres little sectionsof climb and descent, and then there is the descent.

The descent is not as steep and there is 6k of pan flat after it.

Nibali needs to gain a bit of time on Finneste like he did on Zonc and the rest on a 32k tt.

The stage Nieve won probably (as I haven't really checked) had more climbing.

stage 16:
cat.3 Alto de la Cabruñana - 6,6km @ 4,8%
cat.1 Puerto de San Lorenzo - 10,0km @ 8,5%
cat.1 Alto de la Cobertoria - 8,1km @ 8,5%
MTF Alto de Cotobello - 10,1km @ 8,2%

stage 20:

Both have a cat.3 followed by 2 cat.1s to precede the finishing climb. There should be no disputing that San Lorenzo and la Cobertoria are tougher than León and the north side of Navacerrada, especially considering the climbs are closer together in stage 16. However, the finishing climb is harder on stage 20.

Nope, he wouldn't get nearly as much freedom as he did after that bad day.

Freedom!?!?!?

He went with Contador. He didn't go in ANY early break.
And everybody tried to limit the damage or go with Contador...so he did not get ANY freedom.

Fail argument. Try again.

I don't think he has been given any freedom at all. His attacks have been marked by AC nobody else was able to stay with them in Etna and Grossglockner.

Missed today's stage, but it sounds like it was a queen stage indeed.
Everyone gets a rest day!!!

Congrats to Nieve on a fine win!
