I'm wondering what would happen if for example Wegmann is at the front solo. Would any team even try to chase him back, or would they allow him the victory?

Leopard Trek had their day today and i dont mean that in a bad sense. Today was special and right and done fantastically and a tribute to the sport and the memory of Wouter. Tomorrow it is back to business. No doubt some will not give chase but others will as they have lives to lead, careers to manage etc...so i expect it to be business full steam ahead.

I'm sure the race will be competed for just as any other.

But if a Leopard guy is caught literally in the last couple of hundred metres, I would really like to see somebody play Jalabert.

Yeah it would be nice that if a Leopard rider got away on his on near the finish that they would let them have it for Wouter, but these guys are professionals and they have contracts to race for. A lot of Italians will be looking to put in a good Giro to get a contract for next year.

My apologies. I didn't realize it would become the 'official' thread.

If an admin can then that would be great.

As far as Leopard ....I am a huge Rohregger fan. I wonder if he would be up for this!
Aye, you got thread-jacked.

Was planning to do that after dinner, and once folk had posted the other missing bits, so I didn't need to hunt around myself. Been a long couple of days.

Anyway, all sorted now, I hope.

Glad you did. I had seen the thread earlier and with wanting to seem too pedantic, was going to make a request.;)

The show must go on. I hope and think that a few of the winners from now till Milan will make a special celebration to honour the great man.

As for this stage, I am angry that I cant see it, but I will be free as a bird for the Dolomites so its a price worth paying.

The Giro fireworks start here. Hopefully Contador loses a few minutes to make the mountains more interesting.

Lofqwist for the win. Nibali to gain time on GC guys. Some Euskas to crash and one Pozzovovio Rujano Anton and of course Purito to lose time.

I think Alberto will lose some time here, but because of bad luck. Though he does seem in amazing shape if we can believe the Fischer story(already wanted to attack on stage 3, but Fischer told him not to or something, I don't know why)

I hope someone of Leopard will win, but can't see who. Unless they decided to retire now?

Something like that would be nice.

I suspect anyone who wins the stage tomorrow will dedicate the win to Wouter.

Yeah I think you'd have to be pretty cold-hearted to take the win ahead of someone from Leopard if they had carried on.

I disagree. The Leopard guys probably wouldn't want a win given to them, despite the circumstances. Hinault would also be screaming "no gifts" in French.

If a Leopard-Trek guy was working with a top GC contender who broke free, that's different. The time gain would be weighted/compared vs. the stage win, but that is likely the one situation where the win should/could be gifted.

The race is on after the sad, but brief hiatus.

I think it was Andrea Ferrigato chasing Armstrong in that stage in the 1995 Tour. Later he said something along the lines of "I am a professional cyclist, my head was telling me I have to do my best for my team, and it would have been the biggest victory of my career, but my heart was telling me I couldn't take that victory away from him". In the end, I suppose he was content that he didn't have the legs to contest the victory.

I think it is definetly possible that someone contending for the overall could lose a minute or two. I like Scarponi on this course...

You know for all of this talk of AC losing time tomorrow, he's a pretty dam good bike handler. I mean look at the expectations going into the cobbled stage at last year's TdF. Most folks were predicting he would lose time or crash out of the TdF. Save the crash that provided the separation for Andy, he gained time on everyone of the other contenders.

I'm not saying he's going to win, but I don't think he's at any more risk of falling back/losing time than any of the other contenders. I would, however, suggest he steer clear of Menchov... :p

I was thinking of this:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7099697358260861723#

Regardless of if they're working together or not, if a GC rider or small group catches a Leopard guy in the last 200m or so, they should gift them the win like Jalabert here.

Either way, it's all academic what would or could have been done, since Leopard won't be there.

With good weather I think a relatively large group will be together with 2.5 km to go.

Of the favourites Scarponi was the most impressive last year and I am reasonably certain that he will try to gain time however Strade Bianche are further from the finish this time so it would need a brave rider or a strong team to make the race really selectiive.
